June? That seems forever away! Since we've had the new dogs, I haven't seen or heard the hawks at all.

KrisH... he has bourbons, royal palms & some others I can't remember. His name is Lloyd & his number is 803.425.8796. Tell him Priscilla referred you.

They are like puppies wattling around, checking everything you're doing. I'm short & they seem to be almost my size. So amusing but just can't get over the snood. I wonder what it's for?

That is called a snood and it's so funny to watch as it changes based on their emotions. When the Tom is showing off his snood will hang way down below his chin, his face changes color too. Sometimes his face is red, sometimes blue and sometimes purple. The snood shrinks up when he's focused on eating and it almost disappears. Turkeys have been an educational experience for us. I really like them, I just hope they stay friendly. My friend had a pet Tom Turkey and when spring arrived he got really aggressive with her. He knocked her on the ground and was flogging her, her husband had to move the bird off of her. They can get really heavy, my Tom weighs at least 50 pounds. I'll have to get a video of him walking around, it's hilarious - they waddle like ducks.

Joy, what kind of turkey is it? I guess if one gets mean, it can always get the shotgun treatment! And then the oven treatment.

I really want some turkeys but I don't want to wait until June. I'm a fairly impatient person which is why this house process is killing me! Waiting on an appraisal from another bank. AgSouth is not going to work out. They wanted to use all of our land for a comp. There's not a lot of tracts with a house that have sold around here in the last year. So no comps. We went with a local bank and they are going to carve out 7-10 acres and the house. We should know something tomorrow or early next week. I'm still thinking there are not a lot of comps. It has to be within 10 miles and sold in the last year. It really stinks because we're approved for the mortgage, we have a great downpayment, and we can't get a mortgage because of comps.

It's so frustrating! If this one falls through, I'm not sure what we'll do. Time to get creative! On a positive note, we did rent our lake house until at least March 1 to a man here in town with a new company. Maybe he'll love it and buy it! He's paying our mortgage though so that's nice.

That is really wonderful! Sounds like a really great addition to the farm. We have thought of getting a LG dog but with the biggest part of the place still not fenced I think we will need to wait.

Susanne, how high of a fence do you have to keep them in? Are you having any problems with them staying in the pastures? Was one of yours the one afraid of thunder? That could be tough around here.

It was a wonderful treat to go outside and find that the waters were not all frozen like yesterday. It must have warmed up in the night as the hoses are frozen but not much else. Birds all seem pretty happy--except for the guineas who's water hose burst yesterday on their auto waterer and made mud out of half their pen. Yes, another reason for not using auto waters but it is so nice when they do work and I had turned the thing off just not drained it enough I guess.

Hope this day is treating you all well! I am waiting for the last 3 eggs to hatch in my incubator. Not sure what to expect as they are 3 dominique eggs and on day 22, but one did pip this morning so we will see. Maybe the will be like my Marans.

After this I will be shutting down the incubator until February and then....

I know nothing about Turkeys but could probably eat a few...er...I mean, get a few. I have no idea what kind to get though. Everyone has a different idea and I haven't time right now to even research them. DH has been wanting some forever and I passed up a good chance to get some from Williams when they had some big girls for only $15 each.
I will send you a PM or email to find out the details.

I have heard they can be difficult to raise the first few weeks, too but plan to put any I may get with the chicks. I think ducklings may be a bit much for turkeys, don't you think?
I would love to teach them to stay in the back pasture but I bet that won't happen!

I fed my Guinea keets Gamebird starter, too and plan to this year when I start hatching from my breeding pen so it would be on hand if I get any turkeys.
