Susanne, the guineas will not mess with the turkeys! Turkeys make great watch dogs in the yard too. I'm really hoping that mine stay as sweet as they are through spring mating season. If so, I'll be keeping more. They are probably opposite of the guineas personality in that they are always underfoot. They seem to always want to be right with me when I'm in the yard. I had a customer today and the turkeys went right up to him to greet him. Tom had to show his tail feathers and his snood.

I gave them all pats on the head and they were satisfied to just follow us around. Very unusual birds.

Guineas don't get underfoot? Someone need to tell mine! They follow me everywhere. Especially when I first come out. I'd love to go visit that farm. Do they sell eggs/poults?

My guineas kind of keep their distance. The young ones in with the chickens will still move out of my way. But these turkeys....if I'm stooped down filling feeders they are LAYING on my shoulder watching me. When I'm standing in the yard, they come lean right up against me just like a dog would do. I had one little girl here with a checkered shirt on and that pattern simply fascinated my Tom. I finally stepped between him and the girl because he was making her (and me) nervous! He just put his face right on her shirt and stared at that pattern. They are just different.....not like guineas at all in my opinion.

They didn't remove it because they wanted to. They had to because one of the ingredients, as I understand it, has become unavailable from another country. All this out sourcing causes problems in every field and will eventually be our demise. First for our animals and then for us.
It has only been about 6 months since this happened. Several of my friends are vets and told me about it. I have not researched it to confirm anything though as I have no interest at this point. Just passing along info I received from very reliable sources.
I am sure the companies will rally around and find other ways to get more immiticide made or bring out a new product but I think a new product may take years unless they were already working on one but there wasn't any info known on that.
Meantime, a lot of vets had stored back some cartons of immiticide for use or are going the slow route with Revolution or such.

We have several vet techs on here that may be in the know. Hopefully we will hear from one of them.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know this. I do know lots of dog rescue people use other means of treating heartworm positive dogs because of the cost (some use horse meds).

As far as I've been taught there are only 2 ways to treat heartworms...long term use of a safe heartworm preventative or injections of immiticide (the product currently unavailable). Melarsomine is the active ingredient for immiticide that has become unavailable. Not sure there are any horse meds out there that would/could be used to treat heartworms.

They sound just awesome! As soon as a car starts, my dumb guineas run to the driveway and stand in front of it. And then won't move. They drive us crazy! I love them though.

Joy, what kind of turkeys do you have? What do you raise them for? I'm trying to talk Cole into it but he's not getting it at all. Well, what's new. If I waited for him to come around, we wouldn't have the Pyrenees, the guineas, the babydolls, probably wouldn't even have chickens! He eventually realizes I was right all along though!

Our turkeys are just pets. My 7 year old asked for turkeys last year and we got him some poults for his birthday. He picked them out at the feed store. They are the Bronze turkeys. Jonah was lucky, he ended up with 1 Tom and 2 hens. He has better luck than I do. But he stipulated that they were NOT to be sold. He won't even talk about raising meat birds and very proudly tells everyone that we don't kill our chickens, they are pets.

Not sure I'm teaching him exactly right. I'm looking forward to selling the turkey eggs this spring and we'll try hatching some too.

Susanne, the feedstore poults sell out really fast so I called my local store and reserved ours. They take orders and will hold whatever # of birds you request so you're guaranteed to get them. They get them about the same time they get guineas, we got ours in April.

I also meant to say that if you think the guineas are bad about moving out of the way of cars, you should see my ducks!! They are the slowest creatures and they all move together, like a wave. Of course I think I have about 50 free ranging mallards right now so quantity could be the problem. But the ducks are what blocks my driveway.

I don't remember what they use. We use preventative and I haven't been brave enough to use the horse meds for the dogs although others do it successfully. I had a bassett hound with heartworms years ago before preventative was available. I want to say they used something like arsenic to kill the worms. I remember them telling me that the meds could kill my dog. We had to go up there every meal time because she wouldn't eat for them and she had to eat to get the medicine. She survived and lived quite awhile longer. I need to talk to Dr. Patch about this, it would be interesting to know what he is doing.

I'm not sure if this is the right place, please let me know if it isn't.

I have a few Silver Laced Wyandotte cockerel chicks that are 4 weeks old that need to find a home. They have been handled and hand fed, they are very friendly little guys. Out of eight of my chicks I have five that are cockerels and I just can't keep them all. I need to find a home for at least two of them. I would love for them to find a home with someone local. I'd really like to find a good home for them where they will be a pet. I'm a realist, if someone wants them for the stew pot, then so be it, but I would like to at least try to find a home first.

I am in Lugoff, (Kershaw Co) in the Midlands. If you or someone you know might be interested please let me know.

Hi Pink!

Haven't seen you on for a little while here. Hope everything is going OK over there. Did you make out OK during our cold snap last week? I just carried my 5 waterers inside at night, cleaned and re-filled, and took back out the next morning before work. Good to see you here again...

Is it a long o sound or a short o? Which syllable is the most pronounced?

I am southern ... So long O sound

mus KO vee .................... I think I pronounce the KO heavier than the vee.

Here is link to saying
Muscovy Duck . That is how I say it.

ETA: now I see joy's link....whoops

Immiticide is still available for treating heartworms. There was a short supply and Merial sent letters to the vets to notify them. Some of the supply is coming in from the UK area right now.

I'd be careful with any prevention while a dog has heartworms. Over time the worms will die. However, the worms die at random times and if your dog is running through the yard and thr worm drops into the lungs it can be bad news. With the injectable treatment you know when to keep your dog calm and restricted.
