I know they need to be about 95 degrees(with cooler area if they choose away from light) and drop it 5 degrees for each week of age..I use a rubbermaid tote and right now have my week olds under a 40 watt bulb...it is plenty of extra heat as warm as it has been!

Are you using a red or white bulb? I think I need to take back the 250W- its going to be way too hot for them after a week or so.

I am using a 40 watt regular old house/lamp light bulb!! I use a 60 if its cooler and a 75 outside...they fit the silver clip lights and the hood helps direct the heat but I found the big reccomended bulbs were too hot for my smaller brooders. If I was using a huge tub like TSC has chicks in I would use a higher watt!!

I am new to chickens and I have question. I live in Indian Land (Lancaster) SC and will be getting 4 chicks on Friday . I plan on keeping them in the house, but not sure what heat do about the heat lamp. We have had the windows open and it is @ 76-78 in the house during the day. I have a 250W infrared bulb for them but it is going to be way too hot for them. Should I get a lower watt b ulb for them? Only turn the lamp on at night? I figure that they will be able to go outside during the day after a week or so if it keeps staying this warm during the day.

Any suggestions?

Either get a lower wattage light bulb or get a clamp light with a dimmer switch so you can cut the heat down as needed. I really like the lights with dimmer switches, you can find them in the reptile section at the pet store.

So I drove almost 2 hours from home to get my 2 "ameraucana" hens...I had had her text me a pic that was not the best but they looked like my gals in the pic. I noticed in the adjoining run was an EE roo and Silver Amer hen .( def pure and gorgeous) Since I have been really studying the standards and colors I knew roo wasnt true colored so I asked if the hens were hatched from the other pair and she said no.that pair was from Meyers hatchery and the gals were from Cackle. Well I really don't want hatchery birds but I went on cackles site and all the pics of Amers looked true to breed. And I was desperate!!! They did not have the colors listed sepaprate so on the hopes that they have pure colors separated but only sell you a mix of chick colors and not specific colors I agreed to buy them. Got there and they are not quite right...muffs are kinda smokey, legs are nice blue slate, one is otherwise a twin to mine except for the darker muffs but the other has black streaks or spots in the wing area.I have seen black wheaten hens on the ABC site with black tips but not like this...So I guess I either have mixed color Amers or EEs...I will have to post some pics.

I bought them anyway because I thought I was paying $20 a hen( I will pay WAY more for a good hen) but that was for the pair and they are nice healthy pretty girls. She showed me an egg but I thought it was kinda green but Dixie disagreed so we will see if they lay today and I compare...I get perfect sky blue eggs...

SO I AM STILL LOOKING FOR A NICE WHEATEN HEN!!!!!!!!

Ok ya'll a very dear person to me has just been diagnosed with bone cancer...she is very elderly and many of her family do not know yet but she needs everyones prayers....she is a very special lady who has dedicated her retired years to being there for "my" special kids at school...an angel on earth...

So sorry to hear this, good thoughts coming her way and a prayer going up.

Thanks Everyone for the prayers...She is the "Gma" for my special needs class and a great lady with the best stories!! She is in her upper 80s( will not tell anyone more than that) with kids who do not spend much time with her...I knew before the kids...

My favorite story is how her and another lady worked days at the mill and thier husbands worked nights....they snuck and took driving lessons and got thier DLs and her husband NEVER knew...he passed from lung problems 15 years later...she drives herself everywhere now!! She says he didnt want her to drive that he could be her driver...and that she knew women were stronger and she would outlive him so she snuck so she could take car of herself and not hurt his manly pride!!

Hi everyone. I have been without a computer for a while now ( on a borrowed one now---ughhh) I hope everyone is well and that spring is treating ya good.. I ordered my Barred Hollands and oh my gosh they were sooo tiny... Had them all set up then the 2nd night my daughter decided they could get cold and moved the lamp and cooked 7 chicks.. ahhhhhhh but she thought she was helping.. still have 13 two of which are little roo's.

My Great dane has figured out where Eggs come from and is raiding the nest boxes constantly.. Ive got to revamp my coop and lock all the girls up for a while they are starting to plant nests here and there again.. so frustraiting.. especialy when they go to the neighbor from hell's pasture which we cant go on to demolish the nest so they keep going over there..

Morgan bought 4 malard ducklings I forgot how messy they were but they are cute as buttons..

well thats my news..

sorry to hear about your friend Dixiebeast..

ciao
Pink
