South Carolina

We had a good bit of rain here today. I still can't figure out why my chickens insist on staying out in the rain!! I had let them out to free range earlier in the day and unless it was pouring they just stood out in it! I'm pretty sure I have my first broody this year too. My big blue orp hen stayed in the nest box most of the day and was still there this evening. Maybe I'll give her some call duck eggs to hatch for me!

They are chickens - they dont care about the same things we do. As long as they arent in mud and wet er... "goop," it wont hurt them. This is critical.
Chickens with wet feet run into all kinds of problems in time (pun intended).

Quick introduction (ok, again... maybe I've been here before!?)
We currently have 6 hens & are awaiting the hens from 1 dozen eggs in the incubator.

We have just girls, just for the eggs {& enjoyment!}
Sounds like you all had a successful meet-up! What happens exactly at a chicken swap? & how does one transport chickens?

Anyone else in the southern tip of the SC Lowcountry?

Momd29 and papaschickens, are you sure Stuart little doesnt want Cricket to come live with you?

Poor Cricket, she really is having a hard time adjusting, if only she would be somewhat nice to Cujo, but it seems every chicken we have here really does not like Cujo, makes you wonder whats wrong with her.

Sam, thank you again for taking on the Laurens TSC swap, It was well done and I enjoyed meeting so many, I didnt realize that was Phoneman and his sons until I saw the posts. They have beautiful birds!

Sounds like a good weekend was had by many and lots of projects being worked on.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I live near Irmo/ Lake Murray area. I haven't been doing the chicken thing for long. I got my first chickens around last Labor Day.
I couldn't pass up the deal I got on them. I started out with 15 BO hens and 2 BO roosters. I lost my younger rooster to either a predator or the older rooster and 1 hen to prolapse. I then bought 5 Dominique hens from a guy in West Columbia that were just beginning to lay. I have clipped their wings but they still fly over the fence whenever they want to and fly back in. I hardly ever get eggs fro them unless I find the nest. They drive me crazy but are beautiful girls! I bought what is suppose to be 6 Black Australorp hens and 2 roosters from the feed store in March and they are getting their beautiful green sheen on the feathers. I also have my 2 cute little calico chicks from my BO roo and the Dom. hens. I can't wait to see how they turn out! And if any are hens, I'm hoping for a bigger egg! So far the calico chicks are smaller than the BO chicks hatched at the same time, but only time will tell. I am letting their faux mom that hatched them out take care of them and she is doing a wonderful job. She is an Amerucauna, a black and white splash. They are a lot of work, but I enjoy them. And like I said before, if anybody needs a young rooster, let me know.

Good Morning
I have my NPIP testing scheduled for this morning---brrrrrr cold.
I only have to test breeder this time.
Don't have to fight with those darn guinea's this time.

I am looking for a doz. white guinea hatching eggs. I think my 3 whites are males. I don't use my guineas for hatching anyway, just for tick and chigger control. Mine don't bother the fire ants. They don't know they are supposed to eat them.

Amy - how awful! I watched that storm blow through here and thought about you and Kimberly the whole time. I think that tornado was very close to her, wasn't it? Your pictures are amazing, I can't believe that hail. Thank goodness your marans were okay and found some cover. I'm so sorry about the losses. We were very fortunate here, the storms skirted right by us. We only got rain. I hope you can put things back together pretty quick. And the mockingbird is heartbreaking. Those poor little birds in the wild have no shelter. She was probably protecting eggs. I have baby ducklings everywhere in the yard and I'm so thankful we didn't get that hail here.
Been crazy busy here the past month. Am not looking for any free time until sometime in June. When DD & I do get a couple of hours we have been going fishing ;) Just learned about the hail storm....it either missed me or I was at pops. same with tornado. I do remember severe storms hitting once or twice. no damage for us though. I will miss chickenstock. Nicole has an exam Saturday from 1-3. From 4/9 until 4/20 I have driven over 1500 miles. Lots more to go. Luckily Nicole's semester is almost over so that will save me a little driving time! I am behind on posts.....miss everyone....will try to catch up more later. Hope everyone is well.....

Hey I am in Ware Shoals and my name is Lyn. We are pretty close. I agree with you, would like to talk to chicken folks near me too.
