Here is a picture of my new babies! I have 10 and they are cute little puff balls! 3 are still in the bator. Cracks me up--the dark EE is sleeping in the food!

Good morning.

I just have to share, I picked up 2 pairs of buff silkies Sat. at the chickenswap in Hayesville NC. I have been looking so long for a nice roo. Now I have two.

Plus a couple of nice pullets.

If anyone needs a nice BQ partridge silkie roo, please message me. I have pics if anyone is interested. He has no DQ and he could be shown after he molts. Been fighting with another roo.

Patsy, I am sorry for your loss.

Silkies can be hard to raise also so I know how frustrating it can be.

Hooray!!! More buffs around here! I am so excited to finally have some myself but they are young and could be all roos. Mine are just for my Sizzle project so I do not mind the black in the tail and wing feathers, which is how I was lucky enough to get them.

I am glad you got to go to the sale up there. Was it huge? I have heard it is and I hope you found the breeder okay. Obviously so, since you bought some of her Silkies. She is really nice and I like her. I am just tickled that you got some buffs to work with! I drool over that color at shows. I am not a Silkie breeder but so many of my great friends are!

We will have to take a trip to Nikki's house and drool over hers, too. I know she has some lovely birds and I would love to see how they are coming along.

Tickled for you, Mary and I can't wait to see them!

Patsy, so sorry! I know you are really working for those Polish and just having a bugger of a time. It will come together eventually!

Oh, but at least your "Marans" laid you a nice pretty green egg! LOL She gifted you as soon as you took her home. Must be because she loves that new husband of hers.

Howdy folks,

I'm new to the chicken world, 3 miles from town in Greenville, SC. We got 4 hens about a month ago, that are now at about 17 weeks. We are hoping they will start laying in the next month or so. 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Barred Rock, and 2 Australorps.

It has been a fun little journey so far, and this website has been a great resource.

Lost a Polish pullet again! 12 weeks old! So depressing! A beautiful blue/black from Walt. I have a white crested black roo I got almost a year ago with his lady. I fell in love with them and the pair was my first "purchased" birds because I fell in love with the rock star roo and his lady! She gave just a few eggs before I found her passed in the coop. Her eggs produced one pullet which I raised till she was ready to go to the coop with the "daddy". She had a couple eggs and had one break inside and she passed too...no hatchlings. This blue pullet was my next chance at him having a mate in a couple more months when I found her passed in the outside brooder. I understand the Polish are hard to raise and reproduce but this is crazy! Between the lines of this story...there are a lot more egglings (is that a new word?) that have either not hatched, or pipped and stopped...or other problems/heartbreaks!!! I just do not have any idea what is up with the Polish! I want to quit but also I just love them and want to keep trying! Because I just love these birds!!! Thanks to my BYC friends and family for letting me blow off some frustration!!!

Just so confused and really thinking about what to do next...keep on or change direction...I have put in 1 1/2 years trying to build on 1 pair and now still...after somewhat of an amount of effort only have a roo still...

Trying to catch up a little on what is up with people as I really have not had time to read the thread lately. I am sorry to hear about your Polish Patsy. If you remember I raised several pens last year and ended up selling everything I had left by winter. Polish are just a difficult breed to raise. Hope your luck turns around with them they are very pretty birds!

Patsy, are your Dorking hens laying yet? Not that I want any more chicks right now but just wondering how it is going with them.

I have been so busy here I do not know what people are doing any more. Has anyone seen Susanne from Huckleberry Farm? Do we know how she is?

I have hatched some really nice chickens here this spring but boy has it been a lot of work to get them to this stage! I am so loving the rose comb RIR's! The Marans seem to be a bunch of pigs--boy, can they ever eat! The Dominiques never want to go back in their pen to sleep! The red Dorkings are still bald from eating each others feathers--and extra protein just seems to give them more energy to chase each other around--they are free ranging everyday now and are mellowing with that--until a hawk comes by.... The Australorp are just there, a very mellow breed that seems to get along well with each other and any thing else they meet. The Faverolles are still too young to decide what I think of them, plus, the same for the Delaware although they are really into flying already at 3 weeks. Oh, and the Wyandotte bantam chicks I hatched from eggs from Joy are wonderfully sweet things--hope there is a rooster in there for little Raisin, my Wyandotte bantam hen.

I have shut down the incubator already and really do not want to start it up again until fall. I just have not had a desire to hatch guineas like I have in the past years--probably because of raising all these chicks. I am doing well selling eggs though--probably better than keets.

Amy There were only 5 or 6 vendors. There was a lot of activities that had been rescheduled for that Sat. due to rain. Even the 4H'er that the event was to raise money for could not make it. Most had games or other activities that they had to attend. Not really anyone's fault, just mother nature/weather to blame.

I got what I went after so it was not a waste of time for me.

I sold some honey too.

TooterTown is closed this week and next week due to Phillip having to be out west for an auctioneer thing. but other then that. you can find me there most sales. right now though, I warn you. it is a buyers market. I still get fairly decent prices for mine but a lot of folks do not.. Just make sure your birds are in good shape and looking good and you'll do okay for this time of year.
The sale in Pelzer is competitive in price too. on tuesday nights. just have a lot of junk to wade through there. and they mix it in with the chickens too. so if you like junk. they have a diverse collection to look at. ( I got 20 Dollars for a Barred Rock rooster I
I would have taken $12 for 3 weeks ago )
Ducks remain high. their prices did not fall off much. Tooter Town is loaded with them. so is Pelzer and Cawtaba sales.
