I have got to put up new picks of our chicks. They are almost teenagers now. I will try to do that later today or tomorrow. This week, they will be six weeks old and Maranda is going back with the others. It will be interesting I am sure, Lou Ann has been gone six days and keeping everyone alive during HeatWave round 2, has been interesting when doing it by myself and living down the street. Luckily, we have been off work, so I was able to keep their water cold and the runs wet. The chickens and I just have to survive today and then she will be home and the temperatures will cool down, too. I am glad she was able to get away and go see her husband's family in New York. It was a good visit for her.
Last night, after checking on everyone one last time, I was walking out of the run with Maranda and the little ones. Right as I started to walk out the door, a fly landed on my leg. Maranda promptly looked at it and snatched it.She then looked at me as if to say, "I can take care of you, too."

Teresa! I cannot believe they are that old already! Tell me it isn't so! Time sure flies.

You have done a terrific job of caring for everyone during Lou Ann's absence but know you will be glad when she is back home.

I will be excited to see new photos.

28 chicks - no pasty butts and busy eating and drinking! One spunky chick flew out of the box at me. They all look so perky and seem to be quite comfy in their new home. So EXCITED! I'll post pics when we get home from brunch!
 
Here are a few picks of the chicks. I will put up some more when I get them to cooperate or I have Lou Ann to help hold them still!

This is Orpie, instead of Opie, who is a beautiful Black Orp male

Then there is Willow, our female Black Copper Maran. I need to get a better picture of her.

And Trooper who we are pretty certain is a roo. He acts like one and looks like one.This was last week.

And then there is Anastasia, the Blue Orpington

Maranda was the wonderful Cuckoo Maran who mothered them all. She is missing a few tail feathers, but has also become quite the spoiled hen in the process.
 
I would be remiss if I didn't also post a picture of our teenagers. Right after the eggs Maranda was sitting on hatched out, we got some Orps from Mary Bell that were the same age to put under her also. She accepted them with no problem, but one of them wasn't well. Mary Bell offered to give us a couple of pullets since she felt so bad about the one chick being sick. We got two Splash Orps and One Black Orp pullet from her that are probably 9-11 weeks old now, mabe a little older. They are named Jasmine, Kalina and Loralei, but we often just call them JKL.
Now, if anyone wants to tell me how we are going to get this group with the babies and then that group with the older hens, I would love to hear your ideas. Project Integration is starting in the next week or so.

Kalina (standing) and Loralei, taken last Sunday during the heat wave. They actually have a 6 ft by 3 ft run area attached to this crate.
