Chickens are not typically breed conscious. Any of the dual purpose breeds will hand out with and mate with any other dual purpose breed (so long as it's a chicken). Your Australorp will fit in just fine with your Sussex, Rocks, Cochins, etc., so you don't need to get a 2nd Australorp unless you just want a second one because you like Australorps. As are as Cochin colors go, it's a matter of personal preference, but I personally think the Buff Cochins are the most beautiful. Thanks you for the warm welcome and great advice given here.
I didn't realize how to introduce new birds and about the feeding and water stations. Thank You!
The one Austrolorp didn't lay before winter set in so hopefully she'll be popping with eggs at spring time. I actually really like her a lot. So basically the one Austrolorp is the odd bird out? I actually didn't order her as the hatchery put an additional chick flock sent. The chicken farmer didn't want her so she gave her to me. So it wouldn't be good to get a second one then? I feel back since she is the only breed.
I have been looking at the cochins but can't decide on the color.
- @Michael OShay didn't know that they are not breed conscious. Thank You.....I was actually gearing toward the Buff Cochins..... the photos are so pretty and that would put the buff color back into the flock.
This is a great forum, I am learning a lot already.
Thank You
