My local southern states is having a chick day on the 20th. They are having a special, buy a 50lb bag of starter feed and can buy up to 10 chicks for a dollar. How is their starter feed and any concerns with their chicks?

I don't know anything about the store... If I did, I would answer, but I have never even seen one of their store locations...

I am using SS starter and my Red SL from southern States are happy, healthy and very friendly. Could'nt be more happy. Good luck.

if u end up buying the feed and not liking it, you could always just get another kind. Its under 15$ and that is really cheep for chicks!

We use SS starter and the girls love it, all healthy. Sounds like a good deal, but if I were you I'd buy like 5 or 6 bags...you know you need at least that many chicks!!

SS is a farmer coop store. I buy my chick crumbles there and my fuzzbutts are happy and healthy. We buy our rabbit food, timothy hay, and straw there, too, and have never had a rabbit fall ill. They usually have properly labeled bins and information on their chicks that include pictures so you know exactly what you are getting.

The only problem I ever had with SS was with one individual employee who got rather offended when I explained to my children last year that if we got chicks we would get them as livestock, for food, and not as pets. She insisted that the dual purpose birds they had were layers only and that we couldn't eat them. She was nearly in tears. I think she may have bonded some with the little fuzzbutts. We just smiled and thanked her and let her be.

I feed my chickens their layer feed and my chicks their starter grower and all are healthy.

I wonder if my store is having teh same deal... I wouldn't mind gettinga few more layers since I ended up with a bunch of banties and no new layers. lol. Those darn banty chicks are just too cute to pass up!

S.S. is good feed. I'd rate it above average in every way.

$1 chicks is a great price too. Look, all the feed stores use hatcheries, so you're gonna get what everybody gets. At a $1, I'd be quite concerned about selection, but surely they'll have some standard layers like Red Sex links of some kind. Probably, hopefully, some meat birds, if you're interested and maybe some more traditional breeds like Barred Rocks from which to choose.
