Southern States Layer Pellets - Opinions?

Thanks for the info - I did a google search and came up with their website, looks like they sell Nutrena feed.  I've never used it before but will check it out.

I feed Nutrena 'All Flock' and really like it! It has pro&pre biotics that help them get more nutrition from the amount of feed they eat. It also doesn't make my ducks smell too bad. They wreaked to the high heavens on DuMOR!
It's a mini pellet so I can feed it to my ducklings as well. It also has named ingredients like Whole Cleaned Corn, Cotton Seed Meal, Soybean Meal... Those are the first 3 ingredients.
I use it because it has named ingredients and it's the only feed that's at a reasonable price around Roswell, GA.

So, I just went to Morris Meadows Farm on Dickie Mill Rd., and got a 40# bag of Nutrena all flock for $14.70 and a 50# bag of Nutrena chicken feed in pellets for $13.30. Got home, opened the bags... hardly a crumb in sight! The pellets just look and even smell so much better than the Southern States stuff! And the price is definitely worth the few extra miles drive to get it.

Thanks everyone, I am going to check out the Nutrena and from what I can tell the Morris Meadow Farm is only a few more miles from us. Interesting about the ducks too because we also have ducks and we all know they poop a whole lot.

Can't believe Nutrena uses cottonseed meal. One of the worst ingredients from what I've heard. Let us know how it goes. I supposed many companies are cheapening their feed. Even Nature's Best Organic is not using whole roasted soybeans right now.

I did issue a complaint with SS and took a sample to the store. They have been very nice and said they will provide me with a free bag. I also gave them the info off the tag so they could figure out which mill it was coming from. Of course, the free bag might not be any better.

Cottonseed meal is better than soybeans when talking about cheap ingredients. Soy is one of the worst things by way of allergens for animals. A lot of organic feeds including dog and cat foods are getting rid of soy.

I'm not a fan of soy, but the threads on here about cottonseed meal are scary. One of the crops with the most pesticide use, not a feed crop etc. To each his own.

Cottonseed isn't great, I'll grant you that, but if I have to choose between that and soy, I'll go with cottonseed. If you buy it organic, it's less likely to have a ton of pesticides in it... whereas soy, whether organic or not, still has a good chance of causing your animal to develop an allergy to it.

I've never had a real desire to make my own feed, but maybe I'll reconsider.

Very true, but Nutrena feed is not organic.
