Hi everyone, nice to meet you all!
I am new to backyard chickens. We've only had our girls for a few months.
I have 4 chickens in a (wooden) fenced in yard. I clip their wings so they don't wander as we aren't allowed to have chickens and the county has stolen my girls when they've wandered in the past.
Someone ate one of my girls between last night and this afternoon, and I'd like any input you can give me.

1.the girls won't sleep in their coop at night, they just hang out by my back door which is uncovered. Why?

2. whatever got Petunia Chicken grabbed her by the back door (as there were feathers everywhere) and then ate her in the coop (opposite side of the yard) and ate most of her. No evidence of digging. Cat? Raccoon? Hawk or owl? Any ideas? Do chickens get cannibalistic?

3. What's the best animal to act as a guard? Dog? Goose?

Thank you all very much for your input.

I suggest locking them in the coop at night - if something has made a meal out of your chicken it will be back for more.

To start with you might have to round them up - then after a while they should go in by themselves at night

Try enticing them in with food.

Also do you have a perch / roost for them in the coop?
