soy bean meal in the feed? bad for people?

Courtney, the problem is that, like high fructose corn syrup, soy seems to be in everything. People are eating more than they think they are.

Soy is a problem in people when it is eaten in a non-fermented form. Soy oil and soy flour are the two biggest sources. Read the labels on all your condiments. I dare you to find a salad dressing without soy oil.

But like I said, by the time it goes through the bird and in to the egg, how much is a really a problem? I think it is more a health problem for the bird than a problem for someone eating the egg.

LC, the coop may be over reacting a bit, but I really can't blame them too much. Hopefully you can find an affordable replacement feed. Are their any places near you that will custom mix feed? Maybe replace soy with alfalfa and fish meal?

I can custom order feed from my current feed store, my only problem is the price, and unless i raise the egg price to 6 bucks a dozen which they would probably be willing to pay, i cant really switch.

Thanks for the post! I am allergic to soy! That would explain the occasional indigestion problem with eggs. I mostly free-range with added scratchgrains. I penned them for breeding and in doing so started layer again with occasional high pro. The chickens are craving whole corn and scratch instead of layer. I started getting indigestion from the eggs about the same time as the confinement.

years ago I raised 200 chickens for meat.. all I fed them was 50% oats and 50% corn ground coarse..

I had the nicest fattest broilers that you could want. anyhow when some got to adult age, they laid eggs with the best of them..

maybe you might want to experiment with ten of yours and see what happens..

I would look into milling your own feed, or finding a local source. With that many hens, you might be able to come up with a grain mix with enough protein (plus some tallow or something) on your own.

Just an idea.

well west slope ag is where i get my feed and its the closest i have really thats affordable, i will call tomorrow and see how much a mix costs. I will have to order a ton.... = / any one have any mixes?

The protein source for the feed I use is fish meal. People will tell you it makes the eggs taste fishy but my girls eat a lot of it (supplemented in addition to what's in the feed) and I've never noticed an off taste in the eggs.

When cooked and served to humans, rice and beans create a near perfect protein source. I don't know how it would work to try to put them in dry chicken feed, though.
Here's a list of feed recipes. Most include soy, though, but I think a few near the bottom of the page don't.
