soy free

Can anyone recommend a soy free feed for the ducks? I had a potential egg customer call asking about the feed. They are very allergic to soy. I did find one company called Countryside Organics. Anybody have experience with them or any other soy free feed?

I used Countryside Organics for a while. I found the shipping expense made it very pricey so I switched to something closer.

Also, it is not a pelleted feed, and the ducks were able to get more of it when I moistened it. This made it more important to keep track of how long the feed had been out, because I did not want it to mold. But dry, the ducks had a hard time getting more than the field peas.

If I lived closer to the source, I would probably use it again. A friend with chickens raves about how her flock health and egg quality have improved with this feed.

I'd probably tell the caller, sorry, can't find soy free feed.

It wouldn't be worth it to me to completely switch the feed of every animal on my place to make sure there was no soy in any feed. Nor is it worth it to pay more for the feed to meet the needs of just one customer.

I don't know how egg layers do on soy free, but the people raising meat bird get consistently poor results with soy free feed.

I buy my feed through Countryside Organics. The feed itself is a bit pricier than what you can pick up at the local feed store, but they have a delivery option available that only costs $6 for as much as you order (plus, it's also organic). The truck comes out to the area once a month. My last order was 2-50 pound bags of layer feed, one 25 pound bag of grower feed, and a 50 pound bag of diatamacous earth. All for only $6 shipping. That being said....

I'm in Leesburg, myself, and the truck comes out to the Wegman's on the first Thursday of every month. There is most likely a closer spot to you, though.

There aren't very many options for soy-free eggs around here. I'm allergic to soy, but not allergic to eggs, which is why I have my own chickens. If you wanted to go soy-free with the ducks, there's probably a nice market for you. I think it only takes about 14 days for the soy proteins to be completely eliminated from the chickens before the eggs are tested soy free, so keep that in mind.

It sounds like Countryside feed is nice stuff. The price is up there though. I'm still considering if the cost is worth it. There is a drop off site very close to me so that would work out well.I may try it out in the future.
