Here is a no VOC product that will last. Penofin as stated above is a good product and they've added a no petroleum, no VOC oil line called Penofin Verde.

The problem with a stain and sealer is that's twice the work and your protection from sealer is still only one year. doesn't matter if it's thompson or soy. If your using an exterior (deck and siding) stain you'll get multiple years with one application. There are many low VOC water based stains (they don't last as long as oil) and the link above is for a non toxic oil exterior stain.
