Space Coast Chicks?

My flock is a barnyard mix. I mostly have blue egg layers and some brown. Due to recent bobcat attacks most of my pure breeds are gone. I now have a locked coop at night. My sheep are mixed with self shearing and their wool is not good for spinning. I compost the hair for the garden and leave some for the wild birds for nest.
I do send my excess roos to freezer camp and also process my own hogs. I really enjoy raising my own groceries.

Forgot to mention I also have three horses. (use the manure for the garden also)

I really want a blue egg layer or two!! Do you have fertile eggs or just hens?

Glad you had a fun day of coop building. That treehouse was adorable!! Way too much work for me though..I did not even show it to my hubby, because I knew he would not want that project!!

Yeah I will post pics as soon as we get anything together and painted. I'm sure we will be adding more details in the coming weeks but as of now, we only have the base/floor together and on legs. It's going to be a 5'x5' slant roof style with vents and a fully opening back AND external next boxes. Hubby even made the back so that it doesn't have a lip for gunk to get stuck on it when I clean. I can just pull everything out into the wheel barrow. We will be continuing to work on it today and HOPEFULLY finish it!

again.. pics to come!

I suppose I'm not really active on this thread- but I am a space coaster! Today was a loud day at the "homestead"
Paula was in the nest box. Sitting. Pondering the meaning of life. Whatever she does for the hour + she sits there before she lays an egg... when Claire decided it was time for her to pay the rent. I hear a ruckus- sounds like a child screaming in my backyard! So I go out there and Claire is STANDING ON PAULA!!!!

and Paula is mad!! She was definately giving the entire neighborhood a piece of her mind!

So i put Claire in the other nest box and go back inside. And I hear screaming again- Claire is once again standing on Paula. So THIS time, I move Paula to the other box. Not good. She stands in the middle of the coop and sings her egg song at the top of her lungs... no egg yet. Claire then decided she's not quite ready and vacates the nest box.
10 minutes go by- and I go out to check on them again. This time they are both in the OTHER nest box- but at least they are next to each other instead of stacked, so I let them be.
An hour later, all is well- two eggs and no more drama

LoL MellowLadies that sounds like around here some days. You would think they could all find a spot and be happy, but NOOOO they all want the same one.

Blue egg layers as far as EE go are a shot in the dark. Just because a chick hatches from a blue egg doesn't dictate they will lay a blue egg themselves. The only way to know you will get a blue egg from a hatched hen is to get pure bred hatching eggs. Oherwise hatching EE's you can get green, pink, beige, blue, olive but is why they are popular too. Your egg basket always looks so pretty. I currently get olive, green, blue. Hoping for more blue layers out of the recent hatch and the next set to hatch around 5/7, but wont know till those first eggs are layer later this year.

ItsaZoo32 I have blue fertile eggs, but like FLChickens says it's a shot in the dark, I've had hens from blue eggs lay brown, olive and pink. My flock is just a mix. I like getting all color eggs, though my hubby says the blues taste better.

I would LOVE to get a mix from you to add to my bator for the next hatch

I have "mutts" now and just love the colors. They are only 4+ weeks old and too cute!! I am working on several different sets of eggs so I should have lots for people to choose from. I currently have Lt. Brahmas, Dk, Brahmas, Blue-laced Red Wyandottes and Blue Wheaten Marans in my bator set to hatch 4/30
