Space requirements for geese and ducks

Hey Goose Dragon,

Where are you in NC? I'm in Weaverville. 10 minutes north of Asheville.

I have 6 foot wood fencing everywhere except the back of the yard, where I have chain link. The green fencing I use within the yard to move them around and keep them out of my gardens.

I do know that we've had a bear in town. But they go after the Fruit & Veggie Stand & restaurant trash. Apparently they came down the mountain because the berries fruited twice this year. But when it was happening I brought the feed in at night.

I agree about the preditors. Those geese need to be brought in at night. Even if you live in the city there are so many hungry preditors that will find a way to get your birds at night.I have too many to bring them in at night but have 6 foot fencing with hot wires we turn on at night. I had to learn the "hard" way after losing 7 Sebastopols to coons. With the winter coming the preditors will be seaching that much harder for food. Read BYC's section on Preditors. It is pretty scary.

Dorothy.....asebastopolsselect. High quality colored and white Sebastopols.

Also want to add that I asked Dave Holderread about the netting and though he doesn't use it, a farm down the street uses it and has never had a loss since putting it up. Dave said the farmer is pretty tough on the netting and it's still holding up.

Very true about the predators. I live in a rural suburb on a 3/4 acre fenced lot and I'm battling hawks and I'm not sure what else. I lost 2 chickens 2 weeks ago because they didn't make it in for lock-up. A hawk got one and all I found was the head of the other. The hawks haven't messed with my ducks...yet...
