It's helpful to know some because I know when my Hispanic students (who speak English very well) are being cheeky.

I have absolutely no problems with my Hispanic students. They are the most polite, well-mannered students I have taught.

Mine are awesome too. But they get cheeky, not rude, just cheeky; and they switch to Spanish to try to get away with it

It also provides amusment... Like when I was stuck in the line at the DMV a few weeks back and heard wayyy too much about the girl behind me's life, she was on her cell in spanish for a good 45 minutes. Anyone wanna know what her sister did?

I was at the BMV, and there people there that didn't know enough English to take the test in English, so they had to take it in Somali. I'm glad that we have people like that on the roads.

Since we have never declared a national language. Tower of Babel we are.
Walked into a convinence store on my way back from a road trip the other day and the clerk was switching channels on his tv (dish network) and the language was Indian.
Not to be descriminitory here but he could not understand me nor I him, so I just left since he could not complete the sale for gas and food. His lose not mine.

I'm a Spanish teacher, as is my husband. Our son unwillingly became bilingual. He now is glad he did.

The bottom line here is marketability. Our students have to compete for jobs in many international companies. A company is going to hire someone who is bilingual or multilingual over a monolingual applicant.

Many Americans believe that the whole world should learn English. This is one of the reasons that we are loosing jobs and companies here in the U.S. We need to make our students well prepared for the job market!
