Where do people come up with this?

I think it's great. Any chance someone has to further their education...I say go for it.

I get it from the people I deal with weekly!
Mexican born, some legal and some not, my DH was told by some illegal people here from Mexico that we had all better learn Spanish, because they are taking over America, and Americans are helping them to do it!
So that is where I get that from, straight from the horse's mouth!

DH told me about it after they had left, and he prayed that she didn't say anything like that where I could hear her, because it would have been bad!

I do not have a problem with anyone furthering their education.
Just don't tell me I have to learn a foreign language in order to succeed in the USA!

You don't have to, but by the same token you then don't get to complain later that you can't get work when being bilingual is part of the job requirement. When my cousin graduated school in 94, he didn't have to take a computer skills class, he decided he was too cool to be in the computer lab, now 15 years later he complains he can't get a good job, but won't consider for a minute that living in silicon valley and choosing to NOT learn computers when given the chance, was a bad carrer choice.

So no, you don't have to learn it, you can argue to keep your kids outta classes too, but if you make the choice not to, realize no one wants to hear you complain later.

Well said, Saddina.
I know also that there will be several lucrative jobs for military folk and military contractors with linguist skills. While Arabic or Farsi may not be taught at the high school level (though they should!), the ability to learn a language should be cultivated early.

For those who don't plan on travel, what better way to learn of another country. Or to connect with ancestry. There are so many reasons to exercise that part of our brains.

I love being in France and watching their faces light up. Une americaine? Qui parle français? qui [enseigne] français?

Or just greeting my international students in their language. The Asians laugh at my tone. The Hispanics laugh that I get adverbs and adjectives confused in Spanish. Selemat pagee? Salaam Alekoum? Sa wadee khar?

It's a way to honor people when we extend relationship a bit into their worlds.

I feel the same way. Im sad that more people arent as open minded...
I dont want my kids to learn it because I think Mexico is going to take over the USA but because SO many more job opportunities would be open to them. The USA being in the poor state we are I think more people would want to plan ahead for their kids futures.

You gotta admit, aren't there ever days and elections where you sometimes wish you could give certain parts of the country back to Mexico? "Senor Calderon, please take over (offending state). We no longer want responsibility for their foolishness. Best regards, the other 49." I don't think he'd want it either though...

Well that is just one persons way of thinking. Think about how many people here have opinions. Are you really going to let that one opinion judge for the rest of them??

Just kidding. Anyway, you could say the same about any given state and any election, really--I meant it more broadly, that I'm sure lots of Republican-voting states wish that Massachusetts (where I live) could be given to Canada somehow, while plenty of Democrat-voting states wish that Texas could be given back to Mexico, and no doubt plenty of other folks wish that the whole thing could be given back to the Native Americans and we'd hang all the Congresscritters for scoundrels.

Interesting post.

It seems that about 55% of the people replying did not even read the original post and have no idea what this thread is about. Coincidentally, the folks who were most riled about their "English-only" rants misused the English language the most.

My favorite:
"i don't think spanish, or any other lanfuage other than english should be taught here. i think that english should MANDATORY for foreigeners coming here. "do as the romans do" doesn't seem to apply here. here it's, "do as you please, we'll accomodate you". total BS. my daughters will NOT take spanish class. anyone wishing to speak to them will do so in english or move along."

I think this person was writing in "a lanfuage other than english." But other than that, You go, girl! [serkazm]

Oh, and to the outraged poster who mentioned that the man at the convenience store was watching television in the "Indian" language....? Uh, there is no such language. Perhaps you mean Hindi?
