why continue going to the moon? what purpose does it serve? it's not like we could ever inhabit it. I think Mars exploration is more important. : )

We were in a space race with Russia and they were winning. They successfully put a satellite in orbit before us. They got their dog there before us.
Landing on the moon was the ultimate goal for both countries. Lots of pressure for us to do it first. When there's enough pressure and a country's pride at stake well.... it needed to happen or at least believably appear to have happened.
