Spay Day today UPDATE

My Golden Retriever is getting spayed today. She's 14 months. Dropped her off this morning. They just called and said shes out of surgery and is awake now. I also got her hips xrayed, just to see if anything is wrong.

Can't wait until I can go pick her up.

I moved her crate to the basement, otherwise she would have to go up and down steps to go potty. Which she's not supposed to do steps for a while. Guess i'll be sleeping in the basement with her for a couple days.



How long until you dog was fully healed from their spay (running around, swimming, etc)?

My dog was spayed this passed fall. I cant remember how long it took her to fully recover. I do remember though that she ran outside oneday while she was still recovering and when she came back in I relized she had taken all her stiches out!

I guess she was tired of waiting for us to take her to the vet to get them removed!

Ive recently had most of my dogs fixed & the fastest was my doxie. She was running that evening & her incision (sp?) was completely healed in 2 or 3 days.

There is outside stitches that get removed by the vet or yourself after 10 days but there is stitches inside too that dissolve so if the outside ones come out it should be ok just make sure not too open. It don't take long for them to feel well might be groggy that night then be acting pretty normal starting the next day.

I picked her up yesterday around 4:30 in the afternoon. She did good overnight. Ate some this morning and peed several times already.


When I picked her up yesterday the vet tech said that the vet noticed some changes on her right hip. He was in surgery at the time so I should hear from him soon. I can pick up the x-ray cd in a couple days. I felt so sick when she said that, I started crying, thought I was going to pass out. Right away I start thinking horrible things. But she didn't say it was dysplasia, just some minor changes. I have her on glucosamine and will start with a larger dose along with some chondrotin. I'll see what the vet says.

I am glad surgery went well! When my chihuahua mix was spayed, she pulled all her stitches out 2 weeks before they were scheduled to be removed. I guess he didn't want to wait either!

I hope her hips are okay! That is why it is so important to make sure the breeder tests the parents, but there is never a 100% guarantee. Give her a hug for me!

No. I just noticed her hips clicking around 8 months or so. So I started her on glucosamine right away. The vet said the hips felt fine but the only way to know for sure is to do an x-ray. The vet called yesterday and said that she has mild hip dysplasia. He also said that he thinks it will be a long time before any problems arise, if they do at all.

They are getting sent to OFA, so I can get a 2nd opinion since my vet isn't a board certified radiologist. I get to pick up the xray cd probably the middle of this week. I just really want to see them for myself.

It just sucks. I did everything right with her. I spent months researching breeders, etc. We chose a wonderful breeder. There are at least 5 generations back into her pedigree that have their hips certified, possibly more than that. All good hips in her pedigree. The breeder said she never had any with HD. Even if there are generations going back of good hips, sadly, its never a guarantee that your pup wont get it.

She doesn't show any pain at all, runs around outside like crazy, never limps or goes lamp, etc.

I've been told that there are probabaly many dogs out there that have mild HD, that live their lives without their owners ever knowing about it/finding out.

I am so sorry. Maybe you will get lucky and it won't effect her too badly.
It sounds like you did everything right when choosing a breeder. That's really too bad.
I have a five year old chihuahua mix (the one I mentioned before) that the vet pre-diagnosed with HD. The said the hips were popping, but she wouldn't know for sure without an x-ray.
Unfortunately, she was a pet store dog. My parents just wanted to buy us a small breed puppy, before we knew any better. We still love her just the same, but we will live with the consequences. Our other dog, a lab mix, and our three cats are all rescues though, and are in great shape. My lab is 10 and has 0 health problems. I guess it just depends, nothing is certain when it comes to thing like this.
