Special Treats!!

Wild mushrooms are one of those things you need to be sure of before you eat or let somthing else eat. Lots are perfectly safe, some need to be prepared to be safe, some have bizarre side effects and some are down right deadly. Unless you or someone you know is a fungus expert I would not take a chance. A lot of edible mushrooms look almost identical to their deadly counterparts. I do not know much about mushrooms but I had a friend many years ago who conducted many scientific studies on varies fungi. They are very important to the ecosystem but its best to be cautious.

We pick wild mushrooms in our fields. The golden rule is only pick the ones that are pink to light brown under the cup. Anything that is yellow on the underside is a toad stool. We also have the very toxic pretty red ones with spots, we call them " magic mushies "

. Even the horses leave them alone.

PBJ sandwiches! And strawberries. I've tried oranges but my two are scared of them and won't go near them :/ they ran away from watermelon too. My chickens are not normal though lol[/quote I thought chickens were'nt supposed to eat oranges?

I would recommend not feeding potatoes to chickens anymore, they are known to be toxic to them.
Potatoes are not on the whole toxic. Just the green parts that have turned green in the sun. I let mine eat potato peels all the time and haven't died or gotten sick yet. Do you eat potatoes? The basic rule to go by in feeding chickens is if you can eat it they can eat it. And there is this, the amount of solinage in a few potato peels is no near a fatal dose even to a chicken.

I avoid giving my chooks avacado, onions and potatoes. Chickens metabolism is nothing like ours. I eat chocolate ,but I know that it could be fatal if fed to my dogs. An aspirin will kill a cat.
The other thing I see a lot of discussion on is dandelions. The flowers are fine but the plant itself causes string halt in horses, a hideous condition that causes them to almost lock at the knees.
So for that reason I won't be feeding it to my chooks.

My girls go crazy for oatmeal. It's cheap and I make it in fairly large batches. I place it in the fridge and give a couple big scoops daily. I have around 30 birds so they don't get too much at 1 time.

Quote: It take quite a bit of chocolate to kill a dog.....we had a cocker spaniel that ate a double batch of chocolate cookies and did not die...LOL.. and aspirin is not recommended for cats as they don't get rid of pain killing drugs well, but one aspirin will not kill....
