SpeckledHen's ZANE

Zane is awesome, thanks for asking! He's the surrogate daddy to Shadow's baby, Fern. Fern is the daughter of Ivy with Dutch, so she's Hawkeye's granddaughter and actually, she's Zane's niece since Dutch is his full brother. I sold the two Orps she was hatched with, but I'm keeping Fern. Zane is healthy other than his bum leg. He was crowing this morning, too, so that tells me he feels okay. Here he is with Shadow's chicks. She completely trusted him with her babies and now with Fern, and she runs to him when there's a warning of danger overhead.
Zane has his own private cage on top of the broody pen. Every day that is dry, he gets put out on the lawn to get sun and fresh air and he watches out for Shadow and Fern. He seems to enjoy things still, even though he'll never walk again. He hops on his good leg, using his wings as crutches. His wings are really beat up and calloused on the end from the abuse they suffer being used that way, but man, are those wings strong!

Beautiful chickens there!

I love how roos will help tend to the chicks by finding little morsels for them to eat, then make that soft, sweet sound, calling them over to get it.

The problem with a prosthetic is that the leg is stuck in a permanently bent position, but Zane can hop around amazingly fast and well when he is motivated. He's the sweetest boy I've ever had. He and my black Ameraucana, Gypsy, are best buds. I can let her out and she hangs around him alot, is never mean to him, etc. He even on occasion attempts to grab her to mate, but can't really accomplish that.

I thought he is fully capable of mating if he got something to hang on to!

A very willing hen in some kind of trough with firm pillow on either side might do the trick to keep Zane on the top part than falling off.

Heck, as long Zane got his "fix", I think he will be one happy roo!
