***Spew Alert*** Eggs DO NOT go in the Microwave!

I BROKE our microwave boiling an egg.

So I've learned a valuable lesson as well!! This happened after we'd signed a contract to sell the house and our closing date was 1week away, so being the microwave was built in we had to replace it. Thank god for Craigslist! Lesson Learned!!!

Boiling an egg in water makes the heat travel through the egg via conduction. The outside of the egg is hot, and that heat is passed to the inside of the egg.

Microwaving an egg excites water, fat, and sugar molecules inside the food. Thus, you are heating the inside of your egg directly instead of through conduction. Once this internal pressure reaches some certain limit (from all the heat inside since the egg inside the shell is boiling), you get catastrophic failure of the egg shell, resulting in an explosion.

There are devices that will allow you to cook an egg in a microwave, but they are essentially water boilers that shield the egg from microwave and heat it through conduction.

I think you can cook eggs with lower power too, but you're still heating the egg on the inside, so that's teetering on the edge of egg mess.

hehe I was waiting for you to come on here and make a comment like that Miss Farty Pants Extraordinaire.

Poulets - sorry you had that mess to clean up! Funny!

I try not to disappoint!

We jsut cooked up a whole bunch of eggs to give to our girls. I threw the cooked eggs, shells & all, into the processor. DBF walked in & gave me a look of disgust at the smell. As usual, *I* got blamed!

Too funny! I've only nuked scrambled before... never thought about them exploding!

I was making popcorn at my second job where I worked a night shift by myself. The phone started ringing and I ran out of the breakroom to answer it and came back to a FIRE in the microwave..... Luckily it still worked.. but I couldnt get the tell tale black mark out of it. Or of course the horrid smell permeating the office. So I sat down and wrote an email message to the owner of the company and my immediate supervisor saying I was sorry and would replace the microwave if they wanted but my plan to burn down the office didnt work. At the
time they were trying to get out of their lease and move the office but couldnt. I told them I was trying to help us move earlier

They all replied the next morning with funny emails and said don't worry about the microwave. It's still there to my knowledge (I quit last year)
I got more harassment whenever that microwave was used and they saw the black mark on the door than I care to remember. I went back and visited a few months ago and they
asked if I wanted to make popcorn while I was there!
