I have a 3 year old spider plant and every time I cut a pup off and plant it in so soil, it dies. Please give me some advise. Also the new pups have not been growing roots.

And how do I properly cut them off? They leave stumbs.

I cut all the way down towards the plant then cut the long stem or stub off the pup.

I put the pup in water so it’s floating and leave it for a few weeks and it grows roots. I use root/seedling fertilizer in the water.

You could also set them in another pot of dirt nearby while still attached to the mother plant. This mimics what would happen in nature. Once they set strong roots in the new pot you can cut them off from the mother. Good luck!!
