My new (and only!) layer just turned 19 weeks and has given me 5 eggs already, and the other twelve her age are right on the verge. So I decided to construct a better way to offer oyster shell and eggshell than in more pans that can be tipped over. I cut two U-shaped partitions of wood to fit the interior of the feeder, screwed them in from the bottom, and filled them with oyster shell and egg shell. I'm finding that she really likes the egg shell, but I've never seen her eat the oyster shell yet.
(No, my feeder doesn't stay in front of the nest box--I just put it there for a clear picture.)
