Thought I would share these two.

Here is the 3/4 Spitzhauben cockerel hatched in June. (1/4 Sebright). My daughter named him Jack. He still lives w the bantam ee flock that raised him. They've trained him well and so far they get along, he knows his place. We'll see what happens, haven't decided what to do with him, he's a very handsome boy. View attachment 4004163
What a wonderful cross!

Spitzhaubens are becoming more main stream in chickens. They are mentioned on the list at TSC now.
Most of the Spitzhaubens I had came from Rural King, who special ordered them for me from Hoover’s Hatchery. (Which is where TSC gets their chicks from too.)

One thing I just noticed is that Hoover’s isn’t selling any chicks to the public this year! :eek:Their website says to go to your local farm store! I wonder if that means RK and TSC can special order chicks for customers, or if people are stuck with whatever their local store happens to get in. (Not that I want chicks from Hoover’s. Their Spitz were just ok.) The RKs and TSCs around me rarely ever get anything unusual or special.

Well Cackle does try to go for SOP as much as they can so they should end up better. I got some eggs from eBay that turned out pretty good as well. Ill have a picture of the new pullet soon as my weather isn't crappy.

Its the first time they have been listed her in south Texas. They have not been in the sales bins. Not sure they where available for special order. I think your correct on TSC's getting mainly from Hoovers. Its been two years now that I've even looked at Hoovers for chicks. After I had really good luck with Cackle they are my go to hatchery if I need anything replaced.

I do silver Ameraucana and those I can't get at a hatchery. I have to go through breeders to get them.

Some people have found toe deformities on Spitzhaubens from Cackle. There's a few posts earlier in this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/spitzhaubens.164012/page-226#post-27554328
I've ordered Spitzhauben twice from them. A total of I think 15 or so birds. No deformed toes. The Chamois color has the better body type and crest size. Most Spitzhauben lines in the US come from greenfires import of Spitzhaubens I believe.

Toe deformation can come from incubation, I have a few Sebrite I hatched on a first run in a new incubator that have toe issues. I hadn't calibrated it and the temp was off where it should be. Now it's calibrated and I haven't had any more issues.

It's not always bad stock and if it's only a few I wouldn't atrubit it to such.

But your own post was the one I linked to, with the double toenail

Is "toe deformity" the wrong word for something like that? It was certainly a toe, and was not formed correctly.

I have no idea how common it is or isn't. In my case, I had ordered 3 chicks, they sent 4, and two of those had problems. One had a double toenail similar to the one your photo shows, and the other was missing one toenail (toe was a little shorter, no nail on the end.)

Can incubation conditions cause those kind of toe issues?

Ah yes that's the only one I had with that issue. I had more issues with that one hatch I did. No issues after even with breeding those that had the issues. None that have come from those have had issues. I'm still keeping any eye out on each hatch.

Two in one order seams weird but could just be a correlation and not something to worry about. All we can do from that point is breed a few generations our selves and see if it pops up. If not then it's a one off. If it shows up then it's a problem to cull for. I might send an email to them to look out for the issue in their own stock or chicks they hatch from their breeders.
