Spitzhaubens

Pics
Astonishing chicken transformation tonight! The little Sebright, Moonshine, who vowed never to be nice to a Spitzhauben, ever, over her dead body, suddenly began squatting for Fritz and allowing him to make clumsy mating attempts. She's so small compared to him, but I assume they'll get the hang of it. She was following him around in total admiration, bossing him some but never leaving his side. Later in the evening, Flugel attacked Fritz for no apparent crime, and chased him until Fritz squeezed under a little Rubber Maid stool that's a step up to one of the pop doors. His tail was sticking out and Flugel was pecking at it. Suddenly, Moonshine, who had already gone in the coop to roost, came rushing out, all 2 lbs of her puffed up like a little turkey, and she ran at Flugel over and over and chased him away from her beloved Fritzi. These chickens never cease to amaze me........
Also the Spitz pullets are squatting, I reached down to one and she squatted. They are not yet 4 mo old. I am guessing they'll start laying early...

Well here are the gold spangled Spitz. same hatch as that first photo of Chamois and a single black.. so May 6th.

Taken today.

I had another set of eggs hatch today (still hatching now), a bunch of Chamois, no golden spangled at this point.

I got a couple poor shots of my spitz chicks today. I should be able to take better ones when they graduate to bigger housing.

Anybody have a guess how old they are, when they have full wings but downy heads still? I got them 10 days ago, but I don't know how long they had been at the feed store.

Thank you both so much! Those are great pictures for reference. Mine look more like @Faraday40 's 4 week photos. And looking back at my photos from the day I got them, I bet they were between 2 and 3 weeks then.

I just checked my calendar, and that puts them at the same age as the Barnevelders I got from Tractor Supply, so I'll just give them all the same birthday. ;)

My Spitz pullets are now 17 weeks and one is exploring nest boxes! I have reached down to her and seen her squat.
At this point, the hens are policing the cockerels and not allowing either to mate with anyone who protests (and that's everyone.) It is just a swift reprimand often by 2 hens at once. Then they all just go about as if nothing happened. So the hens are keeping the boys in check and I am thinking I will just keep one, Flugel, who is #1. Poultry swap is in 1 week.
