Spitzhaubens

Stucki update. I believe she is a pullet. You can't really see her chest, but under all of the fluff in the front, the feathers have some spangles. She is starting to grow a little crest too. I love her color. It is definitely a blue grey. stucki-7417.jpg stucki7417B.jpg

A weekend of ups & downs. Sold a lot of Orpington chicks & even my fav Spitzhauben Pair. (Yes, my sweet Drumsticks went to live with a very nice couple. We kept one female, but will still need to get the number down by fall.) It always feels good when you get a chance to meet other chicken families and know that your "babies" are going off to loving homes.

I really, really missed my silly guy today. This last week he was jumping the fence & waiting for me by the back door. He also started landing on our garage roof to eat the mulberries. He always flew down when called, but my neighbor was a little shocked at the sight of a chicken on the roof. LOL I sold Drumsticks with his fav pullet & figure that they'll do better together. If I miss having a Spitz roo too much, I'll at least know where I can buy local Spitz hatching eggs for next year....

The sad & shocking news is that the chicken number went down by one today. My beloved Bielefelder "Hen Solo" died. The best I can figure is that she got into my garden by jumping the shortest section of fence by the gate. Perhaps she followed my intelligent lightweight athletic hen. Hen Solo probably couldn't find her way out. I do not want chickens in my garden, so I do not have feeders & waterers in there. Bieles don't do well in the heat. Being stuck in direct sunlight on a hot day with no water probably gave her a heart attack. I feel terrible. The fence is suppose to keep the chickens OUT not IN. (Some of you may remember the pics of my garden carnage from last year, so I made my fence a little taller this year.) I found H.S.'s body around 1pm. I already miss her continuous honking for treats as I do my chicken chores.

RIP my dear Hen Solo

@Alaskan
Thank you.
Bielefelders may be a good breed for you. Mine had no problem in the -20'F arctic blasts, but temps above 86'F were tough. I had a fan & mister going to help her get through a week of 90+F last summer.

I miss my silly Drumsticks too. I opened up the back door this morning & he wasn't there to trip over. LOL

Yeah, hack, we never hit 86, NEVER. A super freak day of 70 might apear every three years.... but 50s and 60s are summer norms.

I just worry that they wouldn't lay all that well, and sheesh would it cost a bunch to get a flock. :D

I know the feeling.
I was seriously surprised how well she managed the cold. Her comb was compact for a single comb & I never needed to use Bag Balm or anything. She was as easy as my EEs with pea combs.

You have Spitzes & Doms, right? Any others types?

Also Rose comb leghorns and Ameraucana. Thinking of tossing the Ams.

In bantam I have Ams and d'anver.

I used to have some d'uccle bantams, they have tiny compact single combs..they STILL froze the tips off.

Even the rose combs worry me... that leader on the back.

I have cold and humidity, I need super tiny combs, one of the reasons I like the Spitz so much. They rock.
