Splay leg in button... culling

Giving any living thing an antibiotic for no reason will make the animal immune to it, and when the person really does have a sick critter the antibiotic won't work. Deffinatly not a good thing to reccomend and should only be used when the animal/bird for sure needs an antibiotic. (just a FYI).

That doesn't make any sense. The problem with overusing antibiotics is BACTERIA becoming resistant to the antibiotics...not the animal. Antibiotics kill bacteria...bacteria can become resistant if antibiotics are overused. An animal doesn't become "immune" to antibiotics.

I had a button like this too, i gave it some sugar water with an eyedropper, it helped it a little but it did eventually die on it's own. I think if I could have gave it the sugar water consistently every few hours it would have gotten strong enough to eat and drink on it's own but I had to be away from home for most of the day...

Good luck!

Awww, thank you. As I suspected when I posted last night, the sick one didn't make it. The other two are doing well & I think we'll enjoy them more now. It is sad.

I've used masking tape on button chicks with bad legs. You really have to act immediately though and keep their energy up with sugar water or karo syrup. If you don't it will be too late within a day or 2 and you just have to cull them. They get too weak too quickly and the others will beat them up.

The problem with overuse of antibiotics is resistent bacteria. Using it one time when it's not needed on one animal isn't going to cause a problem but over time grabbing an antibiotic for everything or those that just give all chicks antibiotics in the water are going to have problems eventually as well as contributing to the rest of us having problems. In this case though an antibiotic would not have helped in the least. A chick that can't walk will get weak from lack of food and water as well as the others picking on it until eventually they show no interest in even trying to eat/drink. At that point odds of them making it are quite low. I see nothing that says there was an illness or bacteria causing anything here. Using an antibiotic in this case would in my opinion fall under overuse or misuse of antibiotics.
