Hi.

My 3 silkie chicks have splay legs. This is certainly a baptism by fire. I assisted all the chicks to hatch, and I am certain they would be dead if I had not. I have used the information on using a band aid/ plaster to fix them, but the chicks keep falling over. Is that ok? They are all cheeping merrily in the brooder, so they seem healthy :)

They won't walk immediately after setting their legs, but they'll get the hang of it. It could take anywhere from 1-3 days for their legs to behave normally, so don't lose hope! Just keep a close eye and change the bandages when they get soggy or if you feel their circulation is getting dodgy.

My only true experience with this was one chick my family hatched back when I was young, and it being the 80's and all we set it with...wait for it....a scrunchie.

This article has a section on splayed legs. I hope something there will help.

They seem a lot better already Amy. Thank you.

Yay! I'm glad they're responding to the treatment! You know, I always wondered if having their lil' leggies tied like that feels like us in a 3-legged race.
