In the Brooder
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.
—- Buff Bantam, 3 days old, lighter than the other birds.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
—- The chick had obvious splay leg on one side. She tends to favor towards her left and walks on her toes when properly hobbled. She has difficulty righting herself and has a twitch to her left wing. She has difficulty squatting down in a roosting position and loses her balance easily when she trips forward. She also seems to breath more quickly/shallowly; I attribute this to the strain of the hobble and holding herself up.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
—- since hatching.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
—-No
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
—- No
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
—- As I purchased the bird from a local feed store to try to help it, I can only assume a sticky/wet hatching. Some sort of birthing issue.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
—-medicated chick crumble and water with nutridrench
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
—- Normal
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
—- I’ve placed a ‘stint’ or hobbled the legs together to encourage proper walking and added nutridrench to the water.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
—-my plan is to self treat.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
—- I’m using a tote border with pine shavings on the bottom covered with paper towels for grip.
—- Buff Bantam, 3 days old, lighter than the other birds.
