Hi. I need help thinking outside the box. I have a newly hatched duckling with a splayed back leg that I “casted” into place with popsicle sticks, a lego and medical tape. It can’t move either leg in the cast. It’s inside a plastic container with a washcloth to keep it upright. Can you think of a way for it to have constant access to food and water? If not, how often should I feed and water it? Thank you.

Muscovy ducks?? It should have access to food and water at all times. It does not matter what container you use s long as it provides for the needs of the duckling.

If it is just splayed legs, try to hobble the legs together with a strip of vet wrap with the legs about 1 1/2 to 2 inches apart. The first method is using a rubber band and a piece of tape, while the second method is a strip of vet wrap. A bandaid cut in half lengthwise can also work. These methods will allow your duckling to walk around and eat of it’s own. Leave it on for 4-5 days. If there is something else going on with the legs, a chicken chair or sling may be needed. There, you may add a food and water bowl in front of it.
