Spoiled chicken

This does not mean you've spoiled the chick , what it does mean is your single birdy has trained you very well to get what is most tasty. Honestly sounds like a very normal chicken to me. :)
LOL thank you. August is fantastic.
Id like to ad that August isnt alone outaide in a coop all by her?self.
She spends most if her time with me either inside the house or outside.
I am building a coop but plan to keep a pen in the house as well.

The rancher whose chick it technically originally was is also my landlord.
The lease states that I can have horses, dogs cats but no reptiles or birds. I informed her when I saved the chick from certain death.
If I had just let it lay there and die in the dirt there wouldnt be an issue with raising a single chick.
The landlord has let the one chick slide. I think she didnt expect me to be able to save it and nurse it to health.
She knows its still alive and that I am building a coop. I make sure she doesnt forget I have August. Iv been asked a few times of I was going to retuen it to the flock. I say no amd that I want August to be a show chicken...
She lets it go at that.
Put I dont want to push my luck and ask to get a second chick. Im afraid she is going to tell me to get rid of or dump August in thw yard with the other birds.
Rate of survival out there is slim even for the chicks who have been raised by the hens. Too many predators for chicks who have bwen accepted to the flock. I feel that August, not being accepted basically has no chance of survival out there on his/her own.
The broody hen who sat on August's egg. Started out with 7 chicks. She now has only 2.

Iv raised this baby since day 1 and she? Is now 41 days old and thriving beautifully.beautifully.
Id be crushed if something happened to August out there after all I have learned and we have learned together.
I am even making the coop ultra preditor proof as much as I am able.
I love my lil bird.

Do chicken chicks have imprinting issues when a human raises a singleton by itself? I know pigeons do and that would be my main concern. A bird imprinted on a human instead of its own species would have zero interest in being with its own kind and forcing it to do so would make for a very stressful, miserable life for it, I should think. But I don't know if chickens are subject to that...

You might want to read a book called 'Buddy: How A Rooster Made Me A Family Man' for some insights on how raising a chicken alone and 'spoiling' it might affect it. It's supposed to be a happy, uplifting story, but I found it ultimately very depressing. Let's just say that the reason I did is because IMO the rooster's social needs were not met...

You have a unique situation, you're having to do the best you can for the chick and keep your landlord on the good side of things. While it is not normal for a chicken to just be with a human for companionship it does happen and it is totally doable. Some chickens just won't fare with others, iv'e seen it myself. Don't know the reason as i'm not a chicken, I do know some of them are just not welcome. Just do your best and be the best chicken you can be for August. :)
