Our girls (3 BO and 3 BR) are a little over 21 weeks old. 2 (1 BO and 1 BR) are laying fairly regularly now and 1 BO laid her first egg today (not in the nest box though).

Tonight, I checked on the chicks (the husband heard what he thought was one falling off theand under the roost bars was an egg on the shavings very near a pile of chicken poop. I picked it up, but it was spongy! Did one of our girls poop an egg too early? Is it anything to be worried about?

And, should we be worried that 3 of the 6 haven't started laying yet?

Thanks for easing this chicken mama's mind!!

No there is nothing to eb worried about. It is a normal thing of young pullets to have glitches int her system. What you resign is called a soft shell egg, and it happens because your girls aren't getting enough calcium. Are you offering oyster shell for them to get the extra calcium? you need to get oyster shell an put it in a dish or bowl. They will eat as much as they need, and then there eggs will get more firm. Even with the OS it is normal for them to have soft shell eggs, and you may keep seeignthem with your next layers to be. Good luck with them, Avery

Her eggs have been hard. This was the only anomaly.

Soft shell eggs are not uncommon with new layers.
They can pop out anywhere due to inexperience and the fact that a softie has a harder time being moved down the pike because there is no hard shell for the contractions to work against.
I'd not worry if they have an adequate calcium source and it only happens occasionally.
