I have 6 sportsman, they do work great, No troubles, they have got better with the newer models. Never had the Dickey, but have seen them. Think they both work about the same, but the Dickey does look better. May be easyer to clean. I buy mine used, rare to see the Dickey used. Course the sportsmans have been around for over 30 years.

If the looks mean that much, then the Dickey would be the way to go. They both work about the same,with the same results.

I think you don't see used Dickeys much may be because not as many people know about them. The Sportsman is a more popular bator, because everyone knows it's out there. Hubby saw 4 or 5 used Sportsman bators for sale in the Market Bulletin today- either La or Miss, not sure. Or maybe people are selling them to get Dickeys. lol That was a joke everyone!! Just keeping it light...............

Good point, lot more sportsman out there. For me if you get a used one for under 300, they work as good as new ones.

i have a new 1502 bator, got it in the afternoon, plugged it in, put eggs in that night, and havent looked back since lol. just got a used 1550 hatcher, got that in the afternoon too, plugged it in the next day, and 2 days later had eggs hatching in it.
i think what made me pick GQF over Dickey, is looking 5 or 10 years down the road. GQF will still be here after the owner has passed on, not sure bout Dickey. even though the parts are bout the same, i think the really only difference is plywood vs solid. which,, is often the opposite that people think. solid wood is great, works great, looks better,, but thats bout it, particle board if kept sealed IS stronger, and wont warp as fast as real wood.
that said,, my next is still gonna be a dickey, just to have 1 lol, but my next used im hoping for an old humidor.

I think now's the time to buy used, if it's what you're looking for. Seems like lots of people are selling used bators now. Oh, and what's a Humidor? Never heard of them, Jim. Someone I know has a Phoenix, I think, that's about 5 years old and holds like 1,000 chicken eggs, and is thinking of selling it. I had a hard time finding info on it. If I hadn't just gotten my bator, I might consider it, although I don't need anything that size.

i knew he's been in biz a long time,, i didnt know his sons are doing it too,, i was afraid after him, there would be no more,,, but, same could happen to GQF lol

well im glad his sons will keep it going, so ,, STILL,, my next will be a dickey lol

unless....... someone is willing to give me 1 of those 5500 egg humidors hahaha

The best is a laminate......

1/8, or 1/4" oak ply, over 3/4" styrofoam with an inner lining of formica is close to unbeatable, and not so expensive.

The ultimate would be some of the modern plastic moldings, but they are beyond the scope of individuals and very small businesses.

If you make the cabinet as described above, it makes the rest of the build, and subsequent use, much easier. Oak ply, trimmed with solid oak looks gorgeous too
