Well, my disaster of hatching eggs is turning around! We've saved two more chicks from the coop and...

WE HATCHED TWO BABIES IN THE INCUBATOR this morning!!!!

Today I'm sectioning off a small area of the coop and will put in there the hen that is currently sitting on eggs I thought would hatch any minute. I'll give her all the saved baby chicks once she doesn't need to sit on eggs. That way the babies will grow up with the flock but still be protected.

Last night, however, i found out what a weeping egg looks like. It had tiny drops of blood coming from one end and there was a horrible smell in the incubator. I immediately removed it.

Question: I believe I noticed dark spots on the egg before the egg actually started weeping. There was another egg in there with dark spots that seemed to be developing more dark spots as the day went on...so just to be safe, I removed that egg too.

I have brown eggs. Can I safely assume that the dark speckled spots are an indication of an egg going bad?
I also have another egg that seems dry and chalky. Is that a bad sign?

I'm feeling better about my chicken abilities! Lots of lessons learned!!!!

Oh, and this morning I cracked an egg for breakfast and discovered a yucky tiny baby chick starting to develop!! Ewwwwww....this has happened to me twice! Does this happen to other people?
