Spots inside beak - is this canker?

MsLisaG - on the egg withdrawal time for FishZole, another name for it is Flagyl. The way we are using it - to treat canker - is "off-label" so since they don't make the drug for that purpose, we assume responsibility for any other applications. The closest I could come to an answer for you was based on a site I think in the UK. They suggested most antibiotics have a withdrawal time of 7 to 10 days, which sounds reasonable for this also I'll send you the link - it has a pretty good discussion on this topic of withdrawal time.

On the acidified copper sulfate, I can tell you there is no withdrawal time for that. Eggs are safe to eat.

Hi everyone,

We have looked at all the posts here in BYC and think one of our hens may have Canker (pictures below).

We are quite new to keeping hens, and currently it is still illegal to keep backyard hens in our city. We don't have many options in terms of seeking medical attention for her (as we risk being 'outed' and reported).

We would really appreciate any feedback from the online BYC community. Do you think she has canker? Or something else? Thanks for your time everyone!!

(ps. she has a scissor-beak/ cross-beak...not sure if that info is pertinent or not, so better to include it just in case!)

Sorry no one has replied. In answer to your concerns, unfortunately I would say yes, it appears to be canker. Please don't try to pick at it as by doing so you risk making it bleed or a secondary infection. If you've done your research, you already know how to treat the bird. But, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. It might help to start your own thread though, because it looks like the original question has been replied to. You'll get more input that way.

On being outed, I really doubt a vet would turn you in for seeing a bird. There are a lot of other animals much more illegal than thickens and vets see them all the time. Don't know where you are - I'm in California and I know of vets who see ferrets, and they are definitely illegal here (last I heard anyway). You stand more chance of being outed by your neighbors- of all things. People can be strange. Dogs bark all night long, but a chicken makes an egg song?.....well.

The scissors beak has no bearing on the infection she has. Your main concern with that is making sure it stays properly in check - getting it trimmed.

I'm so sorry I'm over a month late replying to this, for some reason I didn't get any notifications. :( I agree that yes, it is canker. I hope your hen is much better now.
