Spotted Eggs?

My chickens have just started laying and I saw my red sex link sitting, I came back an hour later and she had laid this. Is it possible for her to lay spotted eggs? Do I have her breeds wrong or is this just a pullet thing?



The egg is also sort of rough and has small bumps which are semi discolored.

Part of it is a pullet thing, especially the rough stuff. Most of that should straighten out. She needs to learn how to adjust her internal egg laying factory and how to apply calcium. The surprising thing is not that some occasionally need to work out some kinks. The surprising thing is how many actually get it pretty close to right to start with. It’s a complicated process, laying an egg.

Part of it is to not believe all you hear about how the egg is supposed to be colored. There are a whole lot of different factors in what an egg looks like, a lot of it is genetics, some of it how early in her lay cycle she is, and who knows what else. Reality gets in the way of what is supposed to happen with chickens all the time.

It’s a good looking egg. Enjoy it. Those spots might or might not go away eventually and the egg color will probably lighten in time. It will still be a good egg.

One of my EE laid a polka-dotted egg when she first started. The first several eggs had white polka-dots on them, some almost 1/4". Since then, the white spots have become smaller to the point that they are not visible to the naked eye. I agree, the whole egg process is quite fascinating.

How old is your sex link? I am still waiting for ours to start laying, they are 19 weeks old now. Congrats on her first egg!

I have two sex links, the same age though. They were 18 weeks when she started laying.

Congrats on the egg! I have 4 RSL that are 18 weeks today! 1 is squatting and hoping for eggs soon!
