spouses and Chickens

A couple of years ago, it was actually HIM that pushed the idea of chickens on me. We moved out to a new place that was out in the middle of nowhere, and before I knew it he was driving up with a trailer full of lumber and was building a coop..........little did he know I secretly hated birds

but I kept my mouth shut. We had guineas and they're not exactly "pets".

They arrived on 9/9/07, our first bunch of 20 straight run bantams and 4 california whites (my idea, just to be difficult, haha), he jumped up when the post office called and I got the brooder warmed up. They were cute, I guess

Fast forward to today, I am a full fledged chicken addict

He is kind of confused and irritated, as I've tripled the amount of birds we have and he's seen many more days of coop construction. But he's always willing to feed for me if I'm gone, and loves to find eggs, has his favorite "girls" and thinks our roosters are super cool. I ordered 10 more pullets recently and left the e-mail confirmation for him to see, figuring he'd have a fit, but he didn't say a word about it....whew! LOL

we just got through building our coop and run.. DH recieved chicks for his birthday from grandaughter. i adore them.. they are 18 weeks now and starting to lay.. everyday we both go out there and collect our 4 eggs lol..he gets so nosy.. he will watch through the window to see if he can catch the hen laying, then when they are done he brings his catch of the day into the house with a great big grin.. he is almost 60 and the joy these little hens bring to us is amazing. he has also gone from watching tv after work to watch chicken tv while we let them free range in the evenings.. that is a miracle lol.

My hubby "accomodated" my desire to have just enough chickens for fresh eggs. He was not really into helping care for them or paying much attention, at first. Now since my incubation "fetish", as hubby lovingly calls it, has really blossomed he has actually made a few decisions about what kind of bird he would like me to hatch. I usually sell or give away any extras. He is now in the process of beat the clock, so to speak, to get another coop together so all the chickens will have a house to be in for the winter.
I got such a kick out it this summer when he had a buddy over...they both hauled lawn chairs into the chicken yard along with the cooler and sat for a few hours drinking beer and visiting with the chickens. His buddy is a city fella so he was more than happy to share his chicken knowledge...was an absolute hoot!!!
