spouses and Chickens

My signifigant other and I dont share the same house so maybe that is why he tolerates it. I have to say though he is pretty good about anything I want to do, but then he is a quiet, low key person.

I was just sitting here,,,thinking the same thing!!! Making a post just for those DH's of ours. All their support,,,,all their work,,,all their time,,,,their money,,,,just to keep the girls happy at home. I'm telling you we are one very lucky bunch on here. To have our mates standing beside us,,,helping us enjoy this hobby of ours. They don't mind their weekends coop building. They don't mind us sitting outside with our flocks. Taking up time, money, and energy. They don't even mind us coming on here,,talking about chickens,and life in general. They call home at lunch break to see how were doing,and always ask after the flock. They take a very active part in our chicken obsession. It's my fiance that started this whole thing. It was his idea, he built the hen house and coop, we caught the chickens together, and he picked out the babies. AND he keeps "improving" their space. If I find one more door, pulley, fan hook-up, treat tray, special feed, etc., I will faint. We both love them, but fer cryin out loud! He even goes out there and sits outside the coop in the morning. And weekends, he is NEVER in the house - always out there making roo noises and getting the roo to crow.

Well, my husband is upset about the chickens right now only because we are fostering 20 of my mom's chickens. They are aggressive and not friendly at all. They destroyed his garden this year and taught mine how to get out. :|

Other than that, he says I could have had thousands of eggs for the money I have put in my chickens.

THEN he names one of my Speckled Sussex Singer, because she sings all day long, without having to lay an egg

He does have a chicken wish list, but he doesn't think chickens and gardens go together, so unless I convince him to fence the garden next year, my chickens are only allowed free ranging in the fall/winter.

When I got my chickens I didn't even ask my husband, I just told him that we were going to the feed store to pick up some chicks.
He just said uh okay, that was it.
He has built the a coop and never said anything when it went from 9 chicks to almost 40 girls and guys now.
When I said I wanted a second coop he just okay or if I mention needing nestboxes he is outside building then 5 minutes later.
So I have been really lucky with that.
I assumed he would just continue to let it be my thing since although he never objected he also didn't seem all that interested.
But now all of a sudden, he loves my little group in the brooding pen.
In fact he is outside with them now, he decided to take them outside for some fresh air.
He will water and feed the other ones out in the coop, but the ones in the pen he dotes on.
He has actually kind of taken over on the 8 week olds, but I am just glad he likes having them now.
First thing he does in the morning while I am trying to get the kids ready for school he goes outside and moves the young flock, with the cutest roo ever in charge into their bigger pen.
We keep them in a smaller pen at night because I think its safer from predators then during the day we move them to a big pen that he built in the garage.
He just loves these chicks for some reason, they are a mix of silkies and d'ucceles and are about two months old now.
One of them is a black straight feathered silkie that I got from Marie Martin, it may be a cross with a frizzle or it may just be a staight feathered chick, but its gorgeous with the poofy feathers around the head but they are very glossy black and hard not frizzy, but they curl up here and there.and its his absolute favorite, I actually hear him talk to her.
He gets a big kick out of the little porcelain d'uccele that thinks he is alot bigger than he really is.
That little roo patrols the pen, walking back and forth along the top of it, if you move one of the girls to the other pen he follows you and then when you go back to get another he follows you, he does this each and everytime you touch one of his girls. Its really funny to watch.
So I think this is really the reason he got into the chickens now, just that he happens to like the personalities and appearances of these particular chickies or who knows if he would ever have gotten into them.

I now get grief for every chicken that I sell or roosters that I give away. Are chickens that addictive in such a short time?

You are all very lucky. My husband is not so happy with me right now. He said yes to the chickens, but I suppose he figured I'd just be so excited that he said yes, then I'd forget about it. His persona is very different from other peoples as anyway... he has PTSD doesn't like when changes go on at home while he's gone, but I told him today that if chickens were the biggest and worse change he had to deal with when he comes home, we are doing pretty good.

Hopefully he comes around like all of your husband's. He comes home in February, so we shall see.

(BTW, I didn't write all this so yall could say, "Thanks for your service" and stuff like that. lol I just wish my hubby was as supportive with my backyard endeavors as the rest of yours.) Yall are super lucky.

My husband likes the chickens, too. He does have a little bit of trouble recognizing specific hens that are of the same breed. It's kinda funny. Every Dominique hen we have is "Lola" to him.

But the ducks... He loves the ducks! He has one young drake that follows him around. And it's not the one that I want to keep. Hmmm... Wonder how that will play out.

My hubby was more excited than i was and brought home six chicks before we had any place to put them. But then all the responsibilities fell to me, and he didn't seem to take much interest. So i read all i could and tried to figure out how to take care of them best, and eventually i got attached and started calling them "my chickens." Well, that made him jealous. Now he'll purposely take care of the chicken chores in the morning before i wake up, and he's getting more and more attached, and he brags about how much the chicken likes him.
