I have read many references to people being members of SPPA and ALBC on the site. It almost sounds as if members of special groups like that are in some way "experts" on certain breeds and would have the "best" of the heritage breeds. I was wondering if there was any sort of requirement for becoming a member of those types of groups other than paying for a membership (i.e., do they get inspected to see if they are following good breeding practices, are their birds "typey" etc.)? Just curious...

I don't know about the SPPA but the we are members of the ALBC. The dues are all that is required for membership - the ALBC holds seminars all over the country. For the heritage turkey seminars they had some of the top names as quest speakers and put out alot of good information.

There isn't "inspections". Some people show their birds, some raise them for meat, they both do encourage breeding to standard. The ALBC office is right here in Pittsboro, NC and has a very intersting library of donated books.

Thank you Steve... so in other words a poultry seller being a member of ALBC (and possibly SPPA) really doesn't mean that the birds or eggs they offer will necessarily be shining examples of the breed... it simply means that they paid their dues?
