One of our friends hatched a few serama chicks just a day ago. One of them has spraddle leg, but she couldn’t keep the little one because of how many more they have on the way, so she gave the little one to us in hopes we could help her.

Legs are splinted and has reportedly been splinted during one night so far, but she keeps falling over onto her back or stumbling as if she’s unbalanced. All she seems to want to do is sleep. Her legs feel rather strong when I’ve held her, she’d even pushed up in my hand. Her breathings also quite heavy.

I’ve tried to offer her food and water but she seems to have no interest and ‘gasps’ when I drip water for her. We also have a heater nearby while we wait for another heat lamp to be found/bought so she doesn’t freeze.

Any ideas on what to do?

I would try to get the chick to drink on it’s own by dipping it’s beak into a lid or small cup of water. Moistened wet chick feed and egg yolk are good to offer. Given chick or human vitamins that contain riboflavin (vitamin B2) and B complex tablets crushed into water is fine 1/4 tablet daily. Do you have a picture of the chick with the leg hobble?
