There is detailed info on Splay / Spraddle Leg on the Poultry Podiatry page at www.PoultryPedia.com . Also, info on Slipped Achilles Tendon, which can make a bird unable to straighten a leg.
Treatment methods are listed for these and many more foot & leg problems.
Please email me any suggestions for additional info that might be good to add!
I have a 3 1/2 week old chick with spraddle/splay leg. Is it too late to try the band-aid or rubber band method? Everything I read seems to say you need to do it asap (which I did, but it didn't take and the spraddle came back)... Is there any hope for this sweet little chick?
Thanks,
Summer
I would just keep trying. As long as the chick can eat and drink on its on, go for it. Make sure the chick can get a grip on its bedding. No paper, too slippery.
It worked wonderfully. I was unsure the first few days as we had grafted the chick back to our broody hen.
By the end of the week you could hardly tell which chick had the splay leg.
She made a total recovery and grew into a lovely strong pullet.
Four days or older is very hard to correct. The "Leg Hobbles to treat Splayed Leg" section on the Poultry Podiatry page of my site linked in my sig below explains some reasons.
It's good you're looking for ways to possibly help your little chick (It sounds like you've got one with a problem right now).
p.s. You can check the chick's legs for a Slipped Tendon, too (There's also a section on that on the webpage). I'm thinking that could maybe be hard to fix in a chick that's been out of place a few days during fast-growing early life, but perhaps it could be treated if your chick has that problem??
If you feel like it, please let us know how things go with treatments if you try them. That always helps others, too.
I have a chick that will be 4 weeks kold on sunday with his right leg slips from under him out to the side. When he hatched he limped and the leg never stuck out but as hes getting bigger its sticking out loads.
Hes a very happy chick and eats and drinks by himself, runs and flaps about.
I have tried to tie his legs together but he spends the whole time falling over and cant get about.
Is there anything i can do for him to help the leg now
I'm sorry I didn't see your post earlier so you'd have had a quicker reply from somebody.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure Check & see if he has a Slipped Tendon.
You MIGHT also find some other ideas that might be helpful on my Poultry Podiatry page. I honestly can't remember everything that's on there.
It sounds like he's doing pretty good thus far, despite his challenge.
