My little pullet (5months old) was acting funny this morning. After checking her out I noticed her ankle is all swollen and purple/greenish. I assume she fell off the perch in a peculiar way.

I'm no expert but I'll assume it's not broken. She is hopping on her good foot and every few steps tries to walk on the bad one. She clenches and flexes her toes but it does look very painful to her.

What to do about this, I read aspirin is something I can give her. Can someone please recommend a dosage for me?

I read some stuff on slinging it, but I am totally confused when it comes to visualizing and executing that with out causing her more pain.

Please help, I don't have the money to take her to the vet and need to work with house hold items that I already have!

Also if any one here treats their chickens with homeopathic medicine and has some advice please chime in, I've got a whole chest full medicine that I am sure could work.

From the sound of it, it may be broke.

Make sure she keeps eating and drinking. You can try to make her a place to sleep so she doesn't have to go up on a roost.

Some folks would recommend putting her in a smaller area to keep her from moving around too much.

The aspirin is 5 plain aspirins to a gallon of water for pain releif.

If you can wrap it with vet tape that may help her get around better.

You may want to think about a mild antibiotic in her water to make sure she doesn't get an infection.

Other than that it is mostly wait and see.

I have treated my chickens with herbs. My family with homeopathic medicine. For sprains and trauma Arnica Montana is what I have used. I have treated hurt chickens with goldenseal etc... bruised, and swollen is arnica territory's. sport tape might help and helping her not have to roost sounds good. you should be able to help with out a vet. I haven't found many vet's that know much about chickens. And I live near a big veterinary college. go figure. oh do you have a comfrey plant? it's the best for this, but they do like to eat it

Thank you Ruby! I did use arnica thank you. It was actually the first thing i thought of. We have 2 daughters under 5, so we try to keep it scattered around the house.
I thankfully live in an area where urban farming is very popular so if it come to it, (i'm crossing my fingers it doesn't) i can bring her to a homeopathic vet.

As for the comfrey. I think I'll try to track some down today at the nursery. I gav her a bath last night in epson salt with witch hazel and she greatly enjoyed it. I did wrap her up with arnica gel but she picked it off.

She's outside now and walking with a limp but she does look better. Time will tell.

Thanks Matt. She's currently on her 3rd day of Sulmet, She has cocci. I'm guessing it's a big DO NOT DO to ad anything else to the water while on the sulmet.

This probably wouldn't work as an antibiotic until her treatment was done would it?
