Spreading laying pellets

I have a coop and a pen. Will the chickens get enough feed if I spread their laying pellets so they “free range” for them?

If you put enough out yes they will get enough to eat, but a lot will be wasted.

X2, not to mention, you'll also be feeding vermin and wild birds. You don't want either near your flock.

If you put it in the same place every day, they will do a good search of that area. As above, I wouldn't just spray it all over willy nilly.

My first thought was that you'll be attracting rodents. Chickens scratch and peck around anyway, regardless of if you put pellets out there. I'd just get a feeder and if you want to only feed a certain amount, or certain times of day, then do that. I just don't see the point of throwing the feed all over.

In old movies you see people tossing food out to the chickens. Well, that was leftovers from the table and whole grain. Whole grain is easy to see, especially yellow corn. The kibble tends to blend.
