Spring 2011 RAISE-A-LONG!

I would think ACV would be very good for your chicks.

I personally wouldn't feed medicated chick starter. I like the plain kind better, but that's just me.

I want to join in! I am a very new chickie mama. I have never had them before and had to learn it all on my own. Yesterday I got 4 baby chicks from a local hatchery, I got
1 Buff orpington
1 Silver Laced Wyandotte
1 Light Brahma
and
1 supposedly Araucana... but I don't think it is and I don't think I can post pictures yet. This little one is colored similarily to the Wyandotte but with more striping, but coloring is the same. it does not have poofy cheeks, nor green legs. It is smaller than the others and stands a little more erect than the little fatties, it is fast, feisty and less social. Reminds me of the Alpha dog in the pack.

The Light Brahma didnt make it through the night. It never stood up well and was dead this morning, but the hatchery replaced it with a healthier, much more active one.

I love these guys! I bought a handcrafted, super sturdy coop from a local guy and it will be ready just in time for them to leave the brooder and go to the coop. Its a chickie palace! I already have the fever. I got these for layers but am itching to get an exotic like a polish or silkie because.. they are fun! I am learning so much about these little feathered friends and can't wait for my girls to grow up and start laying.

I just about peed my pants when I read this...dork power! /fistbump

We have four Barred Rocks and one RIR. Four are named after the Bennett sisters from Pride and Prejudice (Elizabeth, Lydia, Kitty, and Jane) and one is named Peck. Sigh.

They are three days old today and seem to be doing well, other than a wee bit of pasty butt...but have been taking care of it. Hopefully it stops soon.

I am going to the store today to hunt for a bigger plastic bin since they are outgrowing their brooder space. Also will be switching from paper towels to pine shavings for the litter.

I LOVE this site!

How much ACV should I put in their water? I don't want to overdo it.

I didn't want to feed medicated either but that was all they had at Tractor Supply at the time. I'm going to search for non-medicated over the weekend because I'm almost out.

I am able to post some pics!!

If anyone has breed ideas on the last one I am open to suggestions!

Well we got our first shipment last week Friday, March 18 and lost 20 of 26 chicks! We had a very rough start.

However, my hubby called Ideal on Monday, and on Tuesday they had 20 new chicks on their way to meet us!

I have a makeshift brooder here at my store so they stay warm until they have to go home tonight! Happy to report that they are doing GREAT! I only had 1 that didn't make the trip from Texas to Wisconsin. So right now I have 25 Cubalaya and my hubby ordered 15 Delewares from Meyer hatchery the other day! Are we nuts!??

I agreed for him to get the 25 Cubalaya's to help with our ant problem in summer but never would I have thought I would be so in love with chick raising. I can just sit and sit and sit and watch them evolve. My 5 year old gets a little bored just sitting and watching them! LOL.

Thanks for this board and the knowledgable people because it's been great the last week to have feed back

My chicks came today!!! They hatched yesterday (Hoovers Hatchery) and were here in Chicago by 11:30am. I ordered 25 female Australorps and all 27 of them are frisky and already running amuck in the brooder. They've all found their food and water but seem to be ignoring the GrogelB I put in the brooder. I even put it on a shiny foil-lined jar cap so they would be attracted to it but the real food is more interesting. I split this order with two other people but neither one of them has called me back after I left messages to let them know the chicks arrived.

My nine new babies shipped last night (Texas to Maine). I really, really hope they arrive tomorrow, 'cause I'm dying here. It's taking all my willpower to not go to TSC and see what's in the bins.

I've got ordered:

3 Easter eggers
2 Barred Rock
1 Black Sex Link
1 Rhode Island Red
1 Black Australorp
1 Partridge Plymouth Rock

All girls, we hope.

There will be pictures when they arrive.

These will be my first chicks (though not my first chickens). I can't wait!
