Spring 2017 first timers post!

Pics
Meant to get some pictures up earlier, but these are cuter anyway.

Two of the freebie boys got to try going outdoors. When they agreed with me that it was warm enough, I let some of the girls go out for a couple minutes. :) You could definitely tell they were a little overwhelmed by all the open space! Two Tone got to go out twice, and she was much more confident the second go around. Started pecking around in the grass and everything. I love my bebes! <3

The freebie boys make the first venture into the wild unknown.

From left to right: Mulan, Two Tone, Becky, Ginny, and Lessa. They're not sure what to do with the sunshine and open space. Becky and Two Tone ate crushed mealworms from my hand though.

From left to right: Two Tone and Daenarys. Daenarys has no idea why Two Tone is so chillaxed.

This is a great thread where we can hopefully learn from everyone experiences with their chicks. 17 days and counting for me and working furiously on my coop!

We have two Easter Eggers, a Golden Comet, Buff Orp, Barred Rock Plymouth to round out our five. Now 12 days old. Have already been outside in the pen for most of the day Thursday and Friday this week because of the amazingly warm weather here in Northern Virginia.

We got the baby chickens. I picked them up from the feed store in Dallas GA and brought them home Thursday night. When I got to the feed store they only had three left for sale, all Barred Rock variety. While I was there a lady came in having driven all the way from Atlanta (so had I). She was very disappointed. She had planned on getting the chickens to take to her elementary school classroom. The feed store clerk brought her two chickens from the back that were doing poorly. The hadn’t displayed them as they were afraid they wouldn’t survive. She is going to return the next week after calling ahead to reserve them. I filled their food dish and spread a little feed on some paper towels in kind of a trail leading to the food dish.

One chicken seemed especially tuckered out. She just flopped down under the heat lamp. I nudged her and she moved around a little bit and then flopped down again. By morning they were all moving around and drinking from their water, so I guess they will be fine. We are going to name them after Star Wars characters. The names will be Leia, she will be the bossiest of the three, Padme’ will be the smallest weakest one, because Padme’ was always getting attacked, and the third one is Rey since we know less about Rey than the others. Since the chickens hadn’t been sexed yet we might need to make some adjustments to the names if one of them turns out to be a rooster.

I am getting jealous of all the new babies! We have such a hard climate I decided to wait until the end of April for my batch this year. I'm adding 4 to my mixed flock (currently have 2 BO, 2 EE, and a GLW). I'm hoping for a rainbow basket! I'm adding a Delaware, a Welsummer, a speckled Sussex, and a surprise rare marans. My first flock came from a local feed store that gets chicks from Murray McM, and they have a minimum order of 6 and not so many breed options so I decided to go with my pet chicken this time. I've never had them shipped to me - hoping they arrive ok. I'm paying enough for their shipping... I feel like I know what I'm doing this time so it will be less stressful :)

I'm doing pretty much the exact same thing as you. Got my first flock last year from the feed store and and they are great but ordered more from MPC this year. You're right the shipping is crazy! When in April are you expecting? Mine are supposed to come April 17th 1x buff silkie 2x easter eggers 2x silver cuckoo marans

I think April 24. That's my spring break - I wanted to be able to spend lots of time with them.

I also posted on our local forum to see if anyone wants to go in with me on an order from MPC- at least we could split the shipping charge.
