Spring 2017 first timers post!

That's exciting!  I can't wait for your pictures.  What do you think of your ducks?  I'd love to add on some cayuga to my growing flock.
They're crazy! Messy and funny to watch....but They're very skittish at 2 weeks and it's a little disheartening. I'm working on it though. Lots of watching them and treating them. I actually ordered 3 Cayuga for next week along with a handful of bantam assortment. I'll definitely post pictures of them :D I've admired them for a while and am hoping for better luck with them being friendly. They grow up to be so lovely!

It does sound like fun. I just ordered my first supplies for the babies, feeder/waterer, heat lamp container, pine shavings for bedding and food starter. A local store will have chicks on 2/20 so I plan to have everything set up for them. I'm looking for advice on what to expect. Sometimes books just don't tell you everything.

Welcome to BYC and welcome to our thread! I have no answers, my chicks will not be here until April, I am assembling stuff as well. The search function at the top of the page is the newbe's friend! Just ask plenty of questions and you will get lots of help. I am not using a heat light, I am using a heat plate they can go under that way they are not having a light on them 24/7

Good luck and post pics when you get them

Hi! We are just starting out too. In fact we are going to pick up the coop today. Are you building a separate brooding area?

I am going to brood in the coop, I am almost finished building t.

Pick up the coop? If you are getting a pre fab coop before you do go to the top of this page and enter pre fab coop in the search bar, most people say they are never big enough, cheaply made and really a waste of money. A pre fab shed would be better, I think you will want more space!

Good luck with whatever you do, and welcome to BYC

My hen went broody so I have ordered 8 chicks! I am not a first timer but these will be my first chicks this year...does that count?

Me too. I guess I have a month to finish mine. I'm picking up my chicks in a couple of weeks. I got a prefab coop that is supposed to be big enough for 8 hens. Since I only plan to get 4 chicks it should be ok even though I have heard that the coops tend to run small.

Finally got the green light to get chickens from the hubby. Really excited to start my pet chickens. Ordering day olds for April.
