Spring 2017 first timers post!

In my case, 24 hours or so after they arrive or dry off from the incubator here at home. I just watch them until I know they are eating and drinking, know where the heat is, and in the case of shipped chicks, that they aren't suffering from shipping stress. The out to their brooder in the run they go! Our springtime temps dip into the teens and twenties, usually with snow. Three years ago we got our last snowfall on June 6th.
JUNE!? Holy cow! I'm in WV and we've had as late as May 1 but not recently. I'm planning to put our chicks out at about 5 or 6 weeks. They live in a box in my garage right now. My chicks are getting used to me to the point they will climb into my hand for a few seconds. My daughter likes to feed them from her hand too. Super cute!

That's cool I think we will be moving ours out at 5-6 as well. We have yet to actually build the coop but plan to in the next two weeks. In northeast Texas so our Temps are fine now but they're ok in the box in the garage for now.

What do you do when a friend offers you free eggs to hatch?

Now I'll be a 2nd timer I reckon! 4 australorp and 3 d'uccle bantams. See you in 3 weeks babies!

Put some plugs of grass and sod in the brooder today. The chicks loved them! Pecked, climbed, scratched, wallowed, and had a big ol' time. :)

Stretch Run! Beautiful day today, finally. Worked diligently on the coop today and am now getting down to the details, yipeee. Tomorrow we plan on some painting.
hooking up the electrical, and putting up some trim.

One question for you is what do you do, if anything, to your roosts??? We plan on using 2x4s and are considering whether or not to seal the wood? I have read that at least one guy put carpet on the roosts and claims the hens liked that.

9 more days, gulp! TBC, BB

Ok ive got 39 chickens and 6 acres of non fenced land plus apig a pen. Does anyone have any recommendations as far as tractor coop o, regular coop or that thing where you move them from spot to spot after they consume 70 percent vegetation? Also size of a main coop for this amount of chickys

I leave roosts bare for scraping off the poop. I keep a little sandpaper nearby in case the wood splinters so it can be smoothed out.
