OMG the little faces! I love them!

We have had our 2 Orpingtons since Thursday, and are waiting on our 2 Buckeyes to come this week. It's all very exciting and a little scary. Are they warm enough? Are they drinking enough? Why does the poop look like that? Is this coop big enough? Are they getting enough nutrients? These girls are strictly pets (eggs will be a bonus), so we're all very attached already, and the thought of losing any of them is nerve wracking. I tried to learn as much as I could before they got here. The amount of information and varing opinions is overwhelming, so we're just taking things as they come. Nugget and Peepers are already part of the family, and we can't wait for their sisters to arrive!

Are you worried that all the handling of the chicks may stunt their feather growth? I didn't think so.

Can anyone tell me if my chicken math is correct?

I have a coop/run combo from tractor supply that I'm turning into a solid coop because I enclosed their "area" due to my dogs. So the coop is going to be 3'x6' (plus it has a 3'x3' section already from the coop part of the coop/run thing that I'm not counting because I didn't think it counted) and their run is 32'x14'

So 3' x 6' = 18 sq ft for the coop
And 32' x 14' = 448 sq ft of run

448 + 18 = 466 sq ft
466sqft / 14 = 33 chickens. (I did 4sqft of coop and 10sqft of run to get the 14 instead of 4 and 8)

I'm not sure if my math is right and I have no intentions on having that many chickens and not having a barn for them but I am just thinking I have 5 chickens + 5 more coming in April and tractor supply is sooo tempting and there's a minimum of 6 chicks at mine so if I had 16 chickens (they're a mix of standard 4-6 pound hens and bantams plus I have a bantam roo) if anyone thinks that would or wouldn't work?

They also free range when I'm home.

That's the coop, I'm currently working on enclosing the run portion of it to make on big coop.

With that requirement of 6 I'm guessing you're in Texas too?

If you're doing math between the coop and run, I wouldn't add them together before dividing. Four sq ft per bird in the coop is the max. Depending upon your birds you may not need that much room. I have ordered the slightly larger coop from tractor supply. It supposedly holds 15 birds but I'm only planning to keep 10 in there. One of the things to focus on is having about a foot or so of roosting bar for each bird. If you have a large run, like you do, having a little less space in the coop itself shouldn't be a huge problem. Good luck!!

I finished my coop 4 weeks ago and bought 5 chicks 3 weeks ago.

2 Barred Rocks - Dottie and Bossy
1 Ameraucana - Agitha(Aggie)
1 Rhode Island Red - Rosemarie (Rosie)
1 Speckled Sussex - Sasquatch (Sassy) Wife commented on her big feet when we got her.

Here is the coop.

Here are the chicks at about 1 1/2 weeks. (Rosie is about a week older.)

So my husband wanted a duck he had one when he was a kid and now wants another one how could I refuse. We went to tractor supply tonight and bought two ducklings no idea on gender or breed they only had the two kinds the brown or the yellow. Getting them as pets so we didn't really care about gender anyway. Well We get them home and I introduce them to my chickens.... BTW got 2 Cornish crosses, 2 Red Rangers and 2 bantams while we were there too. Anyway so we get them home and introduce them and the new baby chicks seem fine.... a little small but no issues that I could see and the ducks found water and food so ok its dark and time to have them go to sleep..... Nope not so much
The chickens pushed these guys off the momma heat pad and wouldn't let them back on and they just kept crying and crying way longer than the chickens normally do so as these guys are to be pets anyway I pulled them out of the brooder and let my husband cuddle his and I played with the other one..... and so Picture below I wind up on the floor with them sleeping on me course I am crazy enough to just get a pillow and blanket and just let them sleep on me all night to keep them warm as we dont' have a second heating pad until tomorrow when we can go to the store. So I have become Mama Duck as well as a Mama hen Thank goodness this wasn't an impulse buy
