Spring 2017 first timers post!

It looks like I've found our people! This our first year with chickens and it seems the chicken math is hitting us hard. I told my husband that I thought 10 should be our maximum as it's just the two of us and goodness knows we don't need that many eggs. Well, here we are, 30 chickens later and are constantly looking for more!! They're addicting, I swear.

One of our first babies that started the addiction! Her name is chuck

Yes, you have found your people... welcome to BYC and welcome to our thread.

Still here, still reading along and loving all the new fuzzy babies. Welcome to those that have come in after.

Well, my girls are getting bigger, I am beginning to believe they are indeed all girls now (fingers still crossed). They have moved to a bigger space, as our coop is still being finished. The rain here has been awful as well as low temps, so they stay indoors. Hopefully this week they will get a bit of yard time again.
Our newest fun is hand feeding them apple slices, and mealworm treats, sunflower seeds and broccoli. They are hysterical and their real personalities show. Jean Louise Finch is a biter when it comes to treats, she clamps down hard and tries to steal the whole chunk of whatever I am giving them and then proceeds to have everyone chase her down for a bite of it. Lucy (my fav) knows that when the lid comes up and I am feeding the others, it is her time to fly up to the top and walk around like the big deal she thinks she is. She is the only one to do this and knows it gives her a dish of her own treats.
I have turned their heat lamp off a few times, but our nights are still cold and they even mentioned snow again (why?!!!) So I am happy keeping them in the garage a bit longer at night time. As far as the dog goes, he could care less anymore. He just wants my attention and tries to sit on my lap if I have him out with me. So jealous.

Hope all your babies are thriving and looking forward to seeing more of them.

So, I need some practical guidance. Is it really necessary to wait until birds are the same size to put them in the coop together?

I have some 8-week old birds in the coop and some five/six weeks olds that are in a brooder but outside. They're kinda getting too big for the brooder and they don't like being separated.
I dont know if anyone responded as I did not read through all the posts yet. Trying to catch up after my computer died. Anyway I have chicks ranging in age from 9 weeks to 5 weeks all in together. I haven't had an issue yet. I guess you could try it when you can be there to watch. Can the bigs see the small in their brooder? Maybe it will be easier if they can see/hear each other for a couple days first then try putting them together. Good luck

I noticed today that one of my BAs one of her talons is broken or deformed I don't know which one cuz I can't remember if it's been like that from day one or not but it's crooked she seems to be walking n running normal but I read that chickens don't show pain tho n she's only a week old it worrys me cuz that is my girl she's the one that jumps in my hand n tends peck at anyone else that tries she's the one in my profile pic
Im no expert but my light brahma had a really crocked toe when she was little not a few weeks later she is huge and her toe is completely normal. No idea how that happened but it may fix itself.

So out of 16 chicks, we lost 1 for unknown reasons. Which is concerning because they all look so healthy. She was just dead.
We've had one chick with a light case of pasty butt (easily cleaned because I inspect bottoms every afternoon) but I'm telling you.... they are so cute I can't stand it.
